More Wally Daudrich

I find it hard to believe that this is legal.

The NDP are racist as a party (individuals I believe sure, having relatives that are both, but obviously all parties have racists, subtle or otherwise in the ranks)?

That said, it's still a criminal shame that rural communities and most especially and overwhelmingly, Aboriginal communities don't have clean, accessible water.

However, I don't see how anyone who is adamantly pro-forced pregnancy is going to be a help to Aboriginal women's health.

The NDP? Are you nuts?

Um, Niles...get a grip.

No grip required, but I guess my sentence structure didn't come across. I had a question mark at the end of the line. As in, the same brow arching intent of Dr Dawg's comment following mine.

The wally daudrich stuff is the party/parties throwing the racist accusations around.

I do stand by the racist individuals of all party stripes existing assertion, having frustratedly argued in kitchens with them.

I'm lost here. The other post about Wally made sense. This one seems to be questioning the legality of polar watching??

Whew. Thank you, Niles. I feel much better now! Assume, please, that my comment was intended for Wally. :)

But on the main point, I can't see anything illegal anywhere. And the bear picture was photoshopped, no?

The bear picture is real. People pay a lot of money to head out onto the tundra near Churchill in "tundra buggies" to watch the Polar Bears.

Peter,

I haven't really been able to get a handle on how Manitoba regulates its enviro touring business. But companies elsewhere seem to operate under some kind of code that says you aren't really supposed to get THAT close to the critters, especially when they are highly carnivorous and (from what I would estimate from that picture) maybe 7 ft tall when standing on two legs. I would not like to imagine what might have happened if that bear had been angry. Wally`s customers look like so many french fries in a McD`s box.

bigcitylib said...

Dawg, I don`t think thats a photoshop.

OK. I see your point. From one picture, it's impossible to tell who instigated the contact. My understanding is that they drive the buggies into bear territory and park nearby and take pictures (e.g. the picture displayed was probably taken from a nearby buggy).

Bears are very intelligent and curious critters and will investigate pretty much anything if there's a possibility of easy food. I hope that in this case it was the bear that approached the truck

How ethical is it to attact a bear by using your clients as "easy food" bait?

The buggies have huge soft tires that are designed to have a minimal impact on the tundra soil. There are rules about where they can go and not go. At certain times of the year (spring and fall primarily) the bears are migrating from the pack ice of Hudson Bay to areas further north of Churchill, essentially passing right through the community. Bear tourism is a big business, and reasonably well regulated. You have to be motivated to get to Churchill in the first place, so it's not like there are a bunch of yahoos roaming around looking for bears. Anyone venturing out on their own is only going to be dinner anyway.

DN,

Ah I see. Its not just an old school bus then. They're allowed to let them get that close though? Seems a bit intrusive.

Usually the bears find the buggies, knowing that humans tend to be a source of food (one way or the other), and they certainly aren't afraid of humans. It is quite common for them to wander right in to Churchill while migraating. Not something you want to run into in a dark alley.

Hey Big City Lib, there is nothing wrong with viewing polar bears. I challenge you to leave your 20th floor high-rise condo and actually go out and experience nature. It is ridiculous that the NDP and Liberal attacks on a man who makes a living providing tourists the ability to have an up close an personal. Your story just proves how disconnected from real Canadians you Liberals really are.

Now for the viewing pleasure of people who ACTUALLY love polar bears - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Play_fight_of_polar_bears_edit_1.avi.OGG
