Sometimes, the pragmatic move is to do something big that hasn't been accomplished yet. See Brian Schweitzer in Montana trying to bring in single payer health care, for example; there are things we should be doing that just make sense, but aren't coming out of any of the three parties because they're not anti-government or pro-union ideas, and we haven't adopted them yet.

We've been kicking around a negative income tax for years, and my read of the research shows that it would be effective, and where's that?Jessehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06441711770772926643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23292180.post-75988526515924965322011-11-29T11:58:19.661-05:002011-11-29T11:58:19.661-05:00But yes, the Liberal party needs to do more of and...But yes, the Liberal party needs to do more of and outreach to different communities.sharonapple88https://www.blogger.com/profile/11149226422042041129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23292180.post-4333638212653760772011-11-29T11:43:18.286-05:002011-11-29T11:43:18.286-05:00To give an example (mine, not hers): every time I ...To give an example (mine, not hers): every time I visit the little Tamil variety store down my street I pick up a copy of their English language weekly (Lanka News, I think its called), and find it stuffed with CPoC content--Jason Kenney looms large in their pages. And, for whatever reason, they're a bit of a soft touch; not particularly critical, in my view. But I see nothing, not even press releases, from the LPoC. The folks that read Lanka News probably do not read the Star and Globe; if you stick with the usual MSM outlooks, you're not getting your message across to them.

The Conservatives sometimes play a bit of a game with ethnic newspapers to get their coverage. Here's something that happened with the Korea Times:

Conservative Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney walked into The Korea Times office in January and admonished the publisher for being Liberal-friendly.

It suddenly made sense to Lawrence Kim why his staff at the daily newspaper was not given the chance to go with Prime Minister Stephen Harper to South Korea late last year while reporters from Korean weekly newspapers on the west coast got to go.

The message was clear — play ball with the Conservatives and there are rewards.

“We were not offered an opportunity (to go to Korea) ... he came and told me that they thought we are against the (Conservatives) and pro-Liberal but I told him that I am not pro or con,” said Kim, publisher of the Toronto daily. sharonapple88https://www.blogger.com/profile/11149226422042041129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23292180.post-60931199688484143122011-11-29T08:47:20.374-05:002011-11-29T08:47:20.374-05:00Not sure why pragmatism is at odd with big ideas? ...Not sure why pragmatism is at odd with big ideas? I think the Libs should remain pragmatic, not be tied to rigid ideology, but that doesn't preclude attaching themselves to big, bold ideas. I don't get the tension at all.

As for the "gimmick" argument on open primaries, then I guess general elections are similar, given ordinary people, with no affiliation, are given voice? The press have already acknowledged this idea will generate lots of coverage, recent real world examples support "higher than expectation" interest, so if we are armed with good candidates and compelling ideas, I'm not worried.

If the Liberal Party remains what it always has been it's dead as dead can be, it really is that simple, to my mind.Steve Vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04871113039374739208noreply@blogger.com
