SSM Debate to Heat up This Summer?

The Same Sex Marriage Debate will soon be coming off the backburner as supporters and opponents work to target undecided MPs in advance of this fall's promised "free vote" to repeal Bill C-38. According to The Hill, if Harper's vote took place today, it would fail 158 to 137, with 12 undecided. So even if all the undecideds tip to "No", C-38 looks pretty safe.

This is a big waste of time as far as I'm concerned, just a means for the Tories to fire up their redneck base without actually having to do anything for them. In any case, one of my favorite people on the "No" side is Gwen Landolt, founder and current vice-president of REAL Women of Canada. To read about Gwen's truly wingy views on homosexuality, the U.N., the One World Government, and abortion, go here.

Not surprised a liberal would call an exercise in democracy a "big waste of time". The vote will lose and Harper knows that. But it will put MPs on the record with the voters and that is what the Liberals really fear.

  2. The right to SSM is a constitutional matter. Overturning C-38 will not overturn the constitutional obligation to provide for SSM. Unless Harper wants to use the Override Clause, which be an atrocity for something like this, and which I believe he has said he will not do, then this is all wind.

  3. Furthermore, I think the vast majority of Lib MPS have already declared their support/opposition. You seriously overestimate the ability of the religous right to strike fear into anyone in this country.

All of this makes infintely more sense if everyone realises that homophobia is really mysoginy. I can think of no bigger mysoginist than the manipulative Fräulein Gwen *Ptui* LanDOLT.

Take that from someone who has personal knowledge of this so-called person.

Harper expects to lose this vote and its not about rallying the base they are rallied as it is. No, the religous conservatives the Liberals fear are not in Alberta, many are not Christian, they are in the large ethnic communities of the big cities, normally reliable Liberal turf. Given a free vote these folks will learn where their MPs stand. It may or may not please them.

    From a different Anonymous:

I think Harper will eventually allow for a vote on SSM which will probably get defeated. What he may offer is a vote on the definition of a "traditional" marriage--man and wife. Oops! I mean man and woman. This could get the support of all the Conservatives and enough Liberals to put "traditional" marriage over the threshold of acceptance. In practical terms, traditional marriage will be meaningless in law. It will allow the opponents of SSM to say that their own marriages (if they are married) are traditional.
