Libs Snatch A Green

West Coast activist Briony Penn, who will run as a Liberal in the riding of Saanich Gulf-Islands. She gives probably the best explanation for such a move I've heard:

"It nearly broke my heart" to leave the Greens, Ms. Penn said. "But we can't wait around for proportional representation and a national leader capable of being in government."

...although I think E. May is plenty capable as a leader. Whether the Greens can take seats under the current system is the question.

Briony's pretty hot too. Finally, someone who can give Belinda some competition.

  4. Whooee! Well BigCity, that's 1 fer yer Grits. Congrats. Up til now, yer Grits has been content with just stealin' policies. Now, yer movin' on t' people.

I can't say she don't make sense wrt disPR lockin' out Green MPs an' possibly splittin' the nonCPoC vote.

The troublem fer me with throwin' in with the Grits is the Grits weren't exactly Kyoto-compliant when they were callin' the shots. When it comes t' green action, I don't reckon Greens care who does it.

The Cons is too so-con fer me an' fer the GPC an' fer most o' Canada. Greens an' Grits ain't too different on paper but Greens got ol' Mother Earth on the top priority an' won't waffle.

If yer interested in gettin' elected, yer gonna do better as a Grit than a Green. Garth seen it, too.

If yer lookin' fer long term change an' ol' Mother Earth's at the top of yer priority list, votin' Green tells the winners where t' steal their policies from. Come an' get 'em.

I hate to be that guy, but this is exactly the type of comment that shouldn't be made. It shouldn't matter if shes the most beautiful thing on earth or the ugliest, but this fixation with the appearance of women in politics is one of the reasons that many women don't want to enter public life.

Ditching her principles for power proves her qualification as a Liberal.

  8. Maybe BCL should have his posts vetted by you before they're posted?

Get a grip and sense of perspective, please.

  10. Right. She's going to ignore me and insist BCL have his posts vettet through her?

Some of these ProgBlogMods need to focus on running an aggregator and stop policing not only language, but thought.

    It's a battle that can't be won.

  11. West End Bound,

Kate probably refers to the moderator of SDA.

    Polly,

This week I have offended Albertans, certain women, a number of gays, and an honest to goodness witch. So if I were to start worrying too much about THAT, then I could probably never write anything again.

Now, one of the anons mentioned that this is the kind of statement (Briony's pretty hot) that "shouldn't be made". Well of course it should! All things being equal, an attractive female candidate has an advantage over an ugly one. But this also applies to a certain degree among men. Why else do you see so many male politicians with fake tans, black hair but SILVER sideburns? What do you think Tudeaumania was about? His "ideas"? Baloney! NDP women thought he was hot! (my old poli sci teacher at UVIC, who had once been an NDP organizer, used to tell stories about this).

Furthermore, in my own defense, I have been equally superficial about male politicians. This blog is one of the few places where you can find Scott Brison's nude shot, and I once wrote about whether or not G. Kennedy was too sexxy to lead the Liberals (turned out he was).

Now of course Briony (whose career I am actually a little bit familiar with (including her Lady Godiva ride)because I used to live in that area) will also achieve star qualities as a candidate because she is thoroughly familiar with environmental issues. But you can read about that anywhere. I'm more interested that FORBIDDEN political knowledge.

    Right on, BCL...

I'll fight to the death to defend your right to be superficial...

Besides, even though you're a Liberal, you're quite funny at times and not a half-bad writer.

Federal Liberal election tactics come out in Briony Penn's speech...

    1. ethnic polititcs (e.g., she gives a shout out to the Tseychum First Nations)

    2. appealing to the green vote (e.g., promotes fear of oil drilling in Hecate Straight)

    3. dismisses 3rd parties

Anyhow here is my major criticism...

In her speech she twice mentions the progress of Taiwan in envirnomental matters. However, it is the Democratic Peoples Party of Taiwan that has initiated these reforms, not the Koumingtan.

Further, she claims that her mentor is David Anderson who comes from a Shanghai missionary family that supported the Koumingtan.

Is she unaware of the difference between the DPP and the KMT? One stands for the colonization, organized crime and the establishment. The other is a people's liberation movement.

Maybe Brionny ought to stick to plants.
