Well, Duh! Daylight Savings Time An Energy Savings Bust!

From Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The early onset of Daylight Savings Time in the United States this year may have been for naught.

The move to turn the clocks forward by an hour on March 11 rather than the usual early April date was mandated by the U.S. government as an energy-saving effort.

But other than forcing millions of drowsy American workers and school children into the dark, wintry weather three weeks early, the move appears to have had little impact on power usage.

And another thing: giving consumers more daylight after dinner generally means they take the car out again. It very seldom means going for walks in the part. So you lose out in burned petroleum as well.

DST has been promoted as a cure for everything from obesity to excessive energy use, and has been an effective solution to none of these problems. Our Saskatcheanese brothers have always had the right idea: just leave your time pieces alone.

DST has generated no benefits but many man hours for we IT geeks. I hate it.

Well, just because it didn't work THIS time, there's no reason to believe it won't work NEXT time, as long as you really really really believe in it. After all, the science was in, the concensus was there; it HAD to be right!
