...the NDP's seat count meant the party avoided the wipeout of 1982 and the Progressive Conservatives in 1991, the last two times Saskatchewan changed governments.
So they were kicked out of office, but not kicked far, which is a good thing, as they have enough bodies to maintain an effective opposition and challenge again in the next election.
Actually, the Saskatchewan NDP had a pretty good run, and did a pretty good job, in their 16 years in power. Their governance during the downturn of the 1990s, when they were able to cut deficits and restructure without any of the divisive rhetoric or actions that accompanied, for example, Mike Harris' attempts in the same direction, were exemplary.
You have to think that Mr. Wall must be a little bit disappointed. This was supposed to be a victory of historic proportions, and until yesterday the polls had him up by 20 plus points. But in the final analysis, it looks like the "wolf in sheep's clothing" rhetoric changed enough minds to deny him unfettered control. Now the Saskatchewan Party will have to at least pretend to act normal.
LMAO, well said anon 1027...

Have you ever driven down a highway in Saskatchewan?
Didn't think so.
Keep poppin' off though, it's always amusing to read a blog from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

Platty, I thought there was only one highway in Sask., and it ran in a straight line. But you're saying its bumpy? You poor dear! Throw the bums out!
ReplyDeleteNow the Saskatchewan Party will have to at least pretend to act normal.
ReplyDeleteLet's watch and see how that goes. My impression is that Saskatchewan righties are the looniest in Canada, although I don't believe I've ever met one in person. I don't think they ever leave the province...I don't think they're allowed to.
bigcitylib! You see here a sample of the extreme right wing and totally uneducated and illogical nature of supporters of the Saskatchewan Party!
ReplyDeleteThe blessing for their political opponents is that they are so illiterate and so self righteous, their screw ups will start immediately!
Good post BCL ... your analysis is dead on!!
"But in the final analysis, it looks like the "wolf in sheep's clothing" rhetoric changed enough minds to deny him unfettered control."
ReplyDeleteHow does earning over 50% of the popular vote and a majority of the seats deny him unfettered power? The trolls are dying to know how you reached that conclusion.
As an advocate of proportional representation such as MMP surely you would agree that Brad Wall has more democratic legitimacy than either Mike Harris or Dalton McGuinty. Brad Wall leads a true majority government if there ever was one.
Platty, while I'm no fan of the NDP, at least Saskatchewan is working towards twinning the TransCanada Highway, and is almost complete. In Ontario, 90% of the T-Can is two lanes - from Kenora to Arnprior, 30 miles east of Ottawa. It's a national disgrace. Also, the NDP out on the prairies has figured out what the NDP in central Canada has yet to come to terms with; big government is dead. Both Saskatchewan and Manitoba NDP have realized that balanced budgets and reasonable tax levels are a necessity - a starting point - to accomplishing anything else. Granted, Manitoba's Doer government is lagging in the tax department, but even they've made some very modest income tax cuts, and have not raised taxes. It's doubtful Union Jack and his cronies have had that epiphany yet.
ReplyDeleteTypical ti-guy prejudice showing again. He's never actually met or talked to a conservative from Saskatchewan, but yet he KNOWS they're the looniest of the lot. I'll bet he's never actually talked to anybody else outside his xenophobic little inbred clique, let alone some hick from Saskatchewan.
ReplyDeleteWhen you grow up and move out of your parent's basement, I'm sure your eyes and your mind will open. But I doubt I'll stick around another 15 years for that to happen.
How's that other socialist's paradise, Venezuala, working out? See what happens when the gun controllers win, and only the police and military have guns? Hmm, they use them on the pro-democracy student protestors. The people who don't like their property taken, their businesses appropriated, their taxes increased, let alone having their "leader" appoint himself as dictator for life. Yep, gotta love that Socialism!
ReplyDeleteParents' basement? He hasn't seen his parents basement since he was incarcerated. And that was a LONG time ago.
