OTTAWA — The Harper government vowed Thursday to kill legislation introduced by a Liberal MP and quietly passed by the House of Commons that would allow parents to contribute up to $5,000 a year to their children's education and deduct it from their income tax.
After an outburst of pure dorkiness, the Libs Strike Back! What part of this are the Tories opposed to? Do they hate children or parents?
Hint for the Libs: pass a bill making the government buy everybody a puppy. If they kill it, brand them as anti-puppy.
Maybe the liberals can just claim yesterday's bizarro motion was just a distraction . . .
ReplyDeleteI like this because it points out a hint of what could be done if the GST hadn't been cut another point.
Some strike.
ReplyDeleteHe forgot to fund the tax break. That is called DEFICIT FINANCING :)
Proof the Liberals would drive the country back into deficits. Add it on the $65Billion in Steffi promises.
Steffi needs to bitch slap Dan a bit
In all seriousness, I'd rather see a specifically designed tax break like this that has a specific purpose and specific measurable limit.
ReplyDeleteMuch rather see that than the new tax savings plans that, while anyone who can will take advantage of them, slowly erase the tax base over the years and lead if unchanged to disastrous shortfalls in tax receipts in the next generation.
Now THAT is a recipe for DEFICITS!

ReplyDeleteIt's a quality cut, to be sure, but it's not sustainable in the context of the 2008 economic forcast. Maybe it's something that could be done in the future. It seems odd that something costing $1 Billion could get to the Senate without approval of the Government.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Good on Dan. Now that's investing on our children's future!
