Lance Retracts

In January, Lance of Catprint in the Mash published an analysis of the Cools post and IP address 66.185.84.204. In it, he concluded that Richard Warman probably had written the post in question. This analysis served as the intellectual underpinning of much of the verbal junk that has been hurled in Mr. Warman's path over the last several months. For example, see the link from update 2 here. However, yesterday, after having taken a look at Bucket's work, Lance has retracted his analysis and accepted the results given there:

Buckets proves that the IP address in question was a regional Rogers web caching proxy.

S/He has gone to yeoman's effort and time eating research to back up her/his conclusions and there is no room for dispute. Bucket's finding vastly increases the pool of people who could have made the post in question. If you've the inclination, read the whole series.

Good on Lance for admitting error. In fact, I think its something more of the folks on his side of this issue should be doing, now that the case against Warman has essentially collapsed.

I should begin with Ezra himself, although probably the legal stance he has taken has driven him into a corner that he cannot so easily get out of.

More realistically, I would appeal to the reasonable Conservatives that have engaged themselves in this issue. For example, it would be useful if Deborah Gyapong, whose political views I disagree with but who seems a decent sort, should begin to distance herself from some of false claims she and her fellow travellers have wielded in their ideological battle against Warman and Canadian HRCs. It would also be useful if Jay Currie, who has written extensively (if incorrectly) on some of the technical aspects of the case, should admit the obvious and make a few mea culpas.

Under the mud there may be an argument for modifying certain aspects of Canadian human rights law. But these folks will have to come clean before we can realistically see what, if anything, that argument amounts to.

  1. Lance needs to go out into the desert and pick up every feather that was released when he slit open the pillow and scattered the contents to the wind.

I should have followed Buckets' work more closely (I got bored with the IP discussion in the ensuing cacophony of speculation from various 'experts') but I hadn't realised until yesterday that a hostname had been revealed to coincide with the information Lemire had released, which, in my recollection, wasn't in the original release he provided.

And who would those be? Cowardly little gossips such as yourself flitting all over, dropping your little drive-by's and then scuttling away?

Who was too afraid to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the free the speech warriors to avoid being named in the libel suit?

Hardly. At the first sign of trouble, you would either off yourself or push people out of the way to be among the first kapos.

  5. Ouch! More than one way to skin a cat, but the old-fashioned way is best.

  6. By the way, BCL, I'm not sure how decent a person Gyapong is to think BCF's little cartoon asking the Americans to invade Canada is funny and would like to put in on her blog.

The last time invading Canada was funny was when Canadian Bacon came out. Since Abu Ghraib and the horrific stories we've heard of rape and abuse by American military and contract personnel in Iraq, it's really not that cute a notion.

Of course, Gyapong might just be insensate and doesn't think about the rape and murder of innocent people during an invasion; I really don't know. But for a journalist, that doesn't sound all that decent either.

  7. Isn't this the height of conservative hypocricy?

Begging the United States to invade Canada, instead of picking one's self up, and with their own resources, money and talent - moving to the U.S?

Seriously... BCF seems to be urging that the United States Government spend millions of taxpayers money just to satisfy him//her/it's self-loathing of Canada.

If you are so goddamn miserable in Canada BCF, then start applying for that Green Card. I'm sure there are plenty of bloggers who are so unimpressed with your call to turn Canada into a Satrapy of the US, that they would gladly help you leave.

  9. Resources, money and talent? The US isn't going to take BCF. Only reason we're still stuck with him is because unlike his parents, we can't move while he's away at camp.
