Shrieking from this crazy lady aside, I think its a helluva idea for the Liberals to be pounding Stephen Harper on his refusal
"to come clean on the right to choose". Rob Nicholson has announced that a new, totally non-abortion related bill is coming, but nothing
concrete is on the table yet and nothing is likely to be before a snap election call. Meanwhile the old bill is
not going away. The Tories want to go in to their
election talking about leadership--therefore counter by bringing up their knuckle-dragging, Reform Party past. Hit 'em where they're tender, in other words.
Talking point - On Monday, Rob Nicholson, the Minister of Justice, pre-empted a private member's bill from Ken Epp of Edmonton-Sherwood Park, which passed second reading in March, WITH THE HELP OF 25 LIBERAL MPs; FOUR CONSERVATIVES HAD VOTED AGAINST.
ReplyDeleteCan we talk about those 25 so unprogressive liberal MPs who kept this bill alive or does that not fit within the liberal talking points?
You talk about them all you want. As long as they stay shut up, I'm happy.

ReplyDeleteThe only hits that resonate with these troglodytes are criminal charges.
I'm not sure I would want to force Harper to declare what his personal views on this issue are. It seems it would open up the field to having politicians respond to all kinds of questions on difficult moral issues and before you know it, they'll be blithering on about God and the nature of Good and Evil.
To which 'right to choose' are you referring?
ReplyDeleteThe right to choose to have sex?
The right to choose whether or not to use birth control?
The right to choose to sleep with multiple partners?
The right to choose have sex outside of marriage or even a stable relationship?
The right to choose have sex when you know you could get pregnant?
The right to choose to not take any steps to prevent a pregnancy when you have no intention of seeing it through?
Or do you mean the right to choose kill an unborn child?
Or do you mean the right to choose kill an unborn child?
ReplyDeleteOh, if only your mother had exercised that right.
That would require auntie liberal to be human.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to Harper's views, I have no interest in anyone's personal views on abortion. I have a great deal of interest in people's views on the law. I don't care if Harper thinks women should or shouldn't have abortions and under what circumstances. I want to know whether or not he supports the current legal status of abortion in Canada. Not merely a promise of whether or not he will want to change it, but whether or not he supports it.
For example, he was said he doesn't foresee re-opening the marriage debate. Fair enough. I believe him. However, the fact that he fought against the status quo in the sleaziest way imaginable means I will never, under any circumstances even consider voting for the Conservative Party until they bring in a policy of SUPPORT for equal marriage and apologize for their past actions. They can still personally hate queers as much as they want, and they can still personally think women who have abortions will burn in hell.
That's how Progressive Conservatives used to handle these things, which is coherent within a system of laws that apply within a diverse, democratic and largely egalitarian society.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's ever coming back; we'll be dealing with these incoherent "conservatives" for quite some time.
All you would achieve is to have Dion rambling on about a topic that most swing voters don't want to talk about (abortion), while Harper is concentrating on something they do want to talk about (likely the economy, stupid).
ReplyDeleteGo into a bar sometime. Patrons might be chatting about the real estate market or contaminated meat or maybe even the war in Afghanistan. They won't be discussing abortion.
