These are screen shots from Blogging Tory Canadian Blue Lemons, who claims the information came from "inside" and describes the event as "the most patronizing thing I have seen in my many, many years of observing politics". Well, it certainly sounds a rather transparent attempt to curry favour, that's for sure. And poor Mr. Ofori-Attah seems to have quite a load to shoulder.
How wonder how much they're paying Kate McMillan to sit on this story?
ReplyDeleteWhat is a black engagement day?
ReplyDeleteSomething to do with Conrad Black (Conservative Superhero)? I don't get it...

ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised that WASP Liberals can't even fathom what it could be like to be part of a community that is ignored by the elected elite?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Stats Can, young Blacks in Canada have the lowest voter turnout out of every single ethnic group.
So this org is trying to become engaged. They are trying to get the attention of their MPs and others. Maybe the method is not ideal, but for you to sit there and knock them for trying to is a bit trite.
But I am not surprised to see that level of ignorance from you typical dominant culture and don't have a clue Jr OBC members!
DivaRachel:
ReplyDeleteDoes it not occur to you that the conservatives are being phenomenally patronizing about things?
Especially for a party that has been historically remarkably hostile to various cultures other than "WASP" culture...

So spill. You obviously know more about what's going on here than I do. Whos the org?
Also, the really weird thing about this is that the Tories should come right out and call it "Black Engagement Days". That's like calling your event the "Pander to Ukranians Square Dance".

ReplyDeleteBCL, the org is not a secret. It is stated in the press release. CARN.
ReplyDeletewww.carnradio.com
They had a well-attended event on the eve of Obama's visit to Ottawa. I was not there, but it looks like this idea of engagement sprung from that community discussion.
I guarantee you it didn't come from the Conservative "Pandering to Ethnics" Think Tank.
It is sad that when disenfranchised people try to do something, their initiative is discredited and it is assumed that the White Men made them do it.
... and I have never heard of CARN until like last month and I am not affiliated with them nor am I invited to this Engagement Day thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm just sayin'.

ReplyDeleteDiva, what you must learn is that only white lefties are sensitive to your plight. The liberals here feel your pain, oh yes they do as you can tell by their posts.
Remember, this is the website that mocks Jews too. Don't people have a sense of humour anymore?

Goodness. As if there isn't a jumbo jet full of smug leftist patronization right there in that comment.
DIVA,
ReplyDeleteIf it is a CARN initiative, and not a gov. one, then clearly I have written in error.
Do you know it is?

ReplyDeleteAs opposed to Kate McMillan's, I imagine, eh?
Now pipe down, or you'll get the hose again. Adults are trying to talk.
BCLib, I am sure that the CARN org is behind this initiative. if you want to make sure, just email them directly and ask. I don't need to make sh!t up.
ReplyDeletePaulS: thanks for the NDP plug. I wish I were comfortable with their policies. But I will say this: for the NDP, inclusiveness is not just a word, it is a VERB.
I can't help picturing Jason Kenny On A Roll as the least popular item on the menu in the Parliamentary cafeteria.
ReplyDeleteDIVA,
ReplyDeleteI have emailed CARN. I'll let you know if they respond.
