Given that the Kleinosaurs in Edmonton just gave themselves unbounded search and seizure rights over videos (with no recourse whatsoever for the public), it's quite likely that they'll do the wrong there here too...
They've already been taken to court, ten years ago and lost.
They are obliged to administer the law as if sexual orientation was written in it. Their refusal to act does not affect anyone's legal rights. What it does is send a message "despite our legal obligations, we will continue to let you know that we consider you unworthy of being treated with dignity"

Incorrect.
It continues to foster an atmosphere where GLBT in Alberta are treated very much as second class citizens.
Second, it gives license to the legislators (like, say Ted Morton) to introduce all kinds of odious, obviously bigoted legislation. (Illegal or not, it means dragging these cretins through court each and every time to make the point)
I think it's wrong to assume that the presence of sexual orientation would make any difference whatsoever to the actions of Ted Morton. Alberta's government has never cared about the law when it came to gays and lesbians, so why would slime like Morton? Remember, they enacted completely unconstitional legislation on marriage, intruding on an area of federal jurisdiction, in the full knowledge they'd never be allowed to enforce it.
So you really believe that there is nothing objectionable with, (among other things) people advocating to murder handicapped children, and use their burning bodies for fuel? - Paul S?
Yeah.. I'm asking you. Do you really believe that THAT is "free speech"?
For, Alberta's commission was conceived to combat discrimination in hiring and accommodation, when Canada was a very different place.
ReplyDeleteBut those days are gone.
*pfft* Not in Alberta.
I see that Calgary rag is still flogging Ezra as some kind of martyr.

ReplyDeleteThis might have been relevant pre-1982. Now, the Charter trumps anything those cousin-copulating cretins may try to pull.
ReplyDeleteSir Francis,
ReplyDeleteMay I point out that ten years after the Vriend decision, Alberta still has not amended its human rights law to include GLBT people?
They might be cretins, but they are still there.
They might be cretins, but they are still there.
ReplyDeleteThen the cretins need to be taken to court. If we only had a federal Attorney General with balls...

ReplyDeleteAlberta has no desire to be viewed as a laughingstock like Ontario's HRC has become. These are tough economic times, please keep the laughs coming.
