“We’re in the midst of doing a review of the program and that review is to ensure that the funding is providing genuine stimulus to the economy and we’ll have to look at it in that light,” [Darren] Cunningham [spokesperson for Industry Minister Tory Clement] said, noting that federal support of the Calgary Stampede and the Vancouver Jazz Festival, for example, are all facing the same review.
Say no more. Say...no...more.
I'm sure the Stampede will continue to be funded. Can you imagine the awful noise coming from Albertans/Calagarians if it isn't? It's in Stevie's backyard so the funding is a "keeper".

ReplyDeleteWould we notice a change in decibel level at all?
Anyway....Marquee Events Program to Calgary Stampede: "Ah wish ah could quit yew."
If it meets the approval of Harper's boss, Charles McVety, the Stampede will come out okay.
ReplyDeleteWell, if the naysayers against the Pride parade are going to whine about people in leather chaps with their asscheeks hanging out, they haven't seen some of the 'you must be this high to ride this ride' parties during the Stampede, or attended any of the very damn western 'gay' rodeos.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite ad for the Stampede was a tv spot for dressing western. Cowboys descend on a hapless urbanite and go through his closet, turning up chaps and other leather gear. This causes them to congratulate him on his head start.
That shows a sense of humour missing from the goosey gabble in Ottawa. I do wonder about the 'governing' contingent that is the equivalent ratio to all the self-loathing closet cases and adulterers in the Republican party. Ours have aped theirs in everything else.
As a progressive Calgarian, I don't want this to be a divisive issue, like oh, everything else Harper touches. Both festivals are part of the Canadian tapestry and both are worthy of their country's support. And both should be partied until faces fall off.

It is strange to be against funding a gay pride parade but be ok with funding the Calgary Stampede which sees a jump in divorce rates during its run.

ReplyDeleteThis is really funny. I wonder if it's on YouTube?
