Figures...The Knights of Columbus. I've detested that organisation ever my uncle's second wife (a nicer person you'd never meet) was kicked out after volunteering with them for months after it was discovered that she had been divorced.
Hey, KofC: How's about you put up a monument that celebrates adults who manage to keep their hands of little kids pants?
Since CanadianSense seems to have problems with religion and the PQ, I'm sure he will be all over this: http://www.thestar.com/news/insight/article/740337--boom-times-for-pmo-s-god-squad
Allow this on public land then what is there to stop, say, a group of Muslims from putting up a plaque acknowledging the atrocities committed by the Crusaders within the holy lands over 1000 years ago?
Heck, why can't Satanists put up a display?
There are reasons for the laws as they now stand.
Now I would like to ask another question, who the hell bases municipal bylaw decisions on the results of an internet poll?
I don't think this is a "serious" issue as TG depicts.
Where do you rank this in the top 20, 50, 100?
Slippery slope strawman arguement.
The adults at City Council who were elected can handle this without bloggers tainting their local online Poll.
I have NO problem if an organization wants to at their donate some "ART" in a public space.
If the voters determine the "ART" is offensive they can start a petition and run against those in office on that decision.(local issue, if it exists at all)
Our system is NOT in danger of collapsing if we don't involve ourselves about some "ART" that offend some people who:
1) Suggest the secular faith group is the only group qualified to pass judgement of what belongs in public spaces.
The slippery slope is the catholic bashing posing as free speech , I read regarding the narrative from certain bloggers.
TG at 1:39 pm ...."Hey, KofC: How's about you put up a monument that celebrates adults who manage to keep their hands of little kids pants?"
It is not about me and your frustration to make it about me is your problem.
You are free to solicit, provide any Art to any public space. (I don't care)
I give adults elected credit who will review your "ART" . If those elected adults are wrong, the public are free to share the moral "outrage" will act accordingly at the election.
If you believe in Satanism, or the tooth fairy I still don't care.
Follow the rules and best of luck with your "ART" donation in a public space.

BCL,
ReplyDeleteA statue celebrating life mother holding a baby donated by a pro-life group is a bad thing or a political act because they placing in a park?
Don't see a big reason to get upset, same with the over reaction to ban minrets by by the Swiss.
Same with the PQ claiming secularism in banning all religious
http://allpeopleunite.blogspot.com/2009/12/secularism-and-political-correctness.html
I don't have NIMBY regarding this problem.
TG your personal anecdote may be factual but branding as an entire organization, is not balanced.
I had no idea women could join the K of C. Are you sure? It's pretty much a man's domain AFAIK.

ReplyDeleteBalance this...*points to crotch*

I think she was volunteering in some capacity. And maybe she wasn't kicked out, so much as shunned.
Don't question me.

Is that how you spell "Kapuskasing"? ;-)

Yeah, the silence is deafening...
The poll talks about political opinions in public space. It would be one hell of a slippery slope to say no, at least to the question as put.
ReplyDeleteCtwf
ReplyDeleteHow original. I don't see a problem with a group donating some art in a public space.
The Toronto Star may have a problem with the current government, I still don't.
Free Press, free thought, freedom of religion including secularism, AGWism.
Sent this link to P.Z.

A slippery slope CS.

Answer my question CS, would you like a nice Satanist display on government land by your home?
ReplyDeleteA straight answer please, yes or no.
I am not arrogant, this is not about me, or do you think I should dictate what is appropriate for ART in a Kapukasing Park?
ReplyDeleteDoes it violate any laws?
My opinion it does not matter what religion you profess, is the "ART" in a public space a significant issue for Kapuskasing?
or is this you and others making it an issue.
Can you link me the petition or the local protests?
If this is a significant issue where are the local stories?
A direct answer?
ReplyDeleteWould you like as nice big red pentagram in the town square?
Your bullshit non-answer shows you know I'm right. Allow one group, and the can all advertise their 'art' ...even the ones you don't agree with.
