And Then The National Beer Tent Caught Fire...

Why VANOC cancelled 28,000 spectator tickets for the snowboarding events:

The problem is that Vanoc built the spectator area out of bales of hay, with snow on top. But as the snow has melted in the unseasonably warm weather and rain, they’re worried that people could fall into the crevices of the hay. Said Vanoc’s vice president of ticketing Caley Denton: “The snow has washed away to the point where people can punch through and potentially step in between two big straw bales and that becomes a pretty deep crack. We’ve had people go right down to their knees, or in some cases ever farther.

Gonna be hard for Harper and Co. to ride THIS sucker to a majority government.

  4. Yes bubba, logically then, Harper will soon be as popular as Erich Honecker.

  5. probably wont be the first time bubba's tried penis enlargement "techniques".

  6. Bubba (or any other mindless Harpernaut automaton) please answer this for me. How exactly does the performance of our athletes correlate into any positive feelings towards Harper or the CPoC in general?

I notice a distinct lack of goodwill towards Mulroney during the Calgary games, or for Trudeau in Montreal '76. So what is so different now?

I'd say anything good or bad about the organization of these games are more a reflection of VANOC &/or the city of Vancouver. Federal politicians receive next to no benefit, or criticism from these events.

  7. When the first gold medal female athlete was interviewd she was asked about her conversation with the prime minister and his daughter. She told him how greatful she was for the governments suppot in recent years and thanked him for making it possible. I believe that was the CBC interview the morning after. You cant buy publicity like that.

  8. I am sorry my spelling is so terrible. Still learning this posting thing. I will try to improve so my points "might" be given more weight.

  9. Hmmm

...She told him how greatful she was for the governments suppot (sic)

And then you immediately follow with:

You cant buy publicity like that.

Anyone else see the logic issue here?

BTW - Harper is doing a good job with Haiti (though I suspect for opportunistic reasons) and that hasn't helped one iota in the polls. Good luck with the Ekos numbers tomorrow.

  10. bubba, bubba - what do you think she'd say? Go to hell Harper on TV?

Besides, the Vancouver Olympics has been in the works for "7" years. I know you may have problems with math, but Harper's only been PM for 4.

Also, Harper's only coming through with $11 million of what the athletes need - I'd say it's a little suck up time don't you?

bubba - you are so gullible.

  11. Oh you guys. Don't be so hard on bubba.

Of course the first thing Canadians will think each and every time one of our athlete wins a gold is "thank god for Stephen Harper".

And every time an athlete we expect to medal doesn't, we will say "damn that Stephen Harper".

Why, just tonight the CBC did a story on how the government invested 10 million dollars in the downhill ski team who have been shut out of the medals...

  12. And speaking about those EKOS numbers...

Conservatives and Liberals remain tied: poll

You're right bubba. That investment of taxpayer's dollars into the Olympics is really helping out Harper.

  13. If you call a 2.1 % lead tied. You should judge figure skating. The M.O.E. could mean the lead is bigger just as easily as smaller! The liberals are banging their head on that 30% ceiling it happens to be the floor below the conservatives feet.

  14. Well if you want to brag about a statistical tie – knock yourself out. As for there being as much bad news for the grits in there as much as there is for Harper, well that’s without question …but it’s also not the issue. My point is where it the up-tick for Harper you brag about? We’ve won 6 medals (2 gold) and I don’t see that 2% per gold for sweaterboy anywhere.

Oh, and that 48% that think the government is heading in the wrong direction should concern Harper as well. The only places where more people say they are heading in the right direction are (of course) in Alberta, and certain brain-dead areas of Saskatchewan. Pretty sure those are areas where the CPoC can’t really win too many new ridings.

  15. The gold medals are not yet factored into this poll. The next one should see CPOC at 34%. More people think we are headed in right direction than support the CPOC. where are they coming from. They wont be voting for change anytime soon and if it looked like change was coming the CPOC number would instantly climb to near 40% Why do you think Iggy is so scared of even hinting about an election.

Heh, geez TofKW, didn't you take "Olympic Medal Counts in Advanced Quantitative Analysis" during university?

I took a number of chem & stats classes over the years but I must have missed that lecture.

By the way bubba, I like how you keep trying to turn this around on Ignatieff. Harper's numbers dropped from over 43% in some polls down to ~30% all on his own with no help from Iggy. The fact that the grits can't manage to improve past a gain of maybe 3% shows their problems. If we had a credible alternative to Harper this game would be over. As for election calls right now, it would be a stupid maneuver for any party to try.

  18. bubba

Here is what you are ignoring.

At this point in time Harper should be much higher in the polls. His numbers always go up when Parliament is not sitting - something to do with him appearing less petty and partisan, and with the fact the opposition does not get much exposure when the House is not sitting.

And yet, here he is with a statistical tie. I expect his numbers will go up...a bit, but I cannot see how gold medals will have anything to do with it. It is just the natural cycle when Parliament is not sitting.

The fact the LPC have been able to keep the polls at a statistical tie is a win for them.

  19. Oh I’ve said many times over now that Harper’s numbers will improve again once parliament resumes and the prorogation holiday finally ends. But it will be from whatever new business is discussed on the hill, and nothing to do with the Olympics. They should return back to the usual 34-36% range I’d say by May, however his ‘pianoman’ days of +43% polling are over.

And thank God for that, as that whole episode just made me cringe out how stupid our nation has become. Gees, maybe we should just replace elections with a special live episode of Canadian Idol? At the end we all just text in who we think should be the winner. Harper could team up with Stockwell Day for a rendition of “A Hard Day’s Night” about trimming the deficit, then Layton could strap on his guitar and sing “Party for Sale” like his did for the press gallery gala a few years back. And Ignatieff? I dunno, maybe he could do a poetry recital, or read from one of his books. Gilles Duceppe would look on in disgust and plead to Quebecers that Canada has become a nation of morons, and that sovereignty is their only option …and he’d be right. Hell, I’d join the Bloc and move to Sherbrooke.
