What CK said. Rae is a great man, and he'll be a good custodian, but on a permanent basis I don't see him doing anything but holding what we have or doing worse - and we can still do worse, just fyi.
It's time for someone other than one of the 2006 leadership contestants to run the Party.
Yikes! The Harper attack ads will just write themselves!
There's the possibility that attack ads against Rae would have the same effect as attack ads against Stephen Harper do. Like Harper, all of Rae's skeletons are out in the open. No one has to be told about them. And like Harper's most of them are in the past.
As for the upcoming leadership race.... here's hoping that it's an interesting one. There were a lot of candidates back in 2006.. who knows what's going to happen now.
"Yikes! The Harper attack ads will just write themselves!" "Really! Isn't it time to find somebody new?"
Good grief. Any candidate will have attack ads generated towards them, be it Rae, Leblanc or Trudeau(that is, if they pose a threat to Harper, which the Liberals obviously don't at the moment). Won't matter if they are new or old.
What Liberals need is money to counter them, Dion didn't have it and neither did Ignatieff.
Obama was hit hard by the Republicans, but he had the money to fight them.
At least with Mr. Rae, Liberals won't have to spend millions on introducing him to Canada and Canadians.
If nothing else, if he's not going to run again, he's almost like a senator, or a premier looking for a legacy.
He might damn well be able to say anything he bloody likes and frankly, once you wind Mr. Rhodes Scholar Former Premier Rae up, he has a lot to say that's very impressive and speaks clearly and tellingly to progressives. Not to mention sharply witty.
If Rae is asked to become the permanent leader, he will need to resign as interim leader a couple of months before the leadership vote. That way, he will no longer be interim leader and be eligible to participate in the leadership vote. (That last part may be in dispute). There will need to be an interim-interim leader.
You're on brother :)
ReplyDeleteThe Cat doesn't bet on politics (unless it's fruit or vegetables), but I agree: he will be asked to run for permanent leader, and will so run.

ReplyDeleteReally! Isn't it time to find somebody new?

Until then, as the Calagary Grit notes, we have some potential piano duels between Rae, Harper, and Layton to look forward to. ;)
Rae wins any piano duel, easy.

Well, Rae the talent, better music and yeah I think there will be an encourage Bob to run theme.

ReplyDeleteAnd so the takeover of the National and Provincial executives commence by the leadership camps....It'll be a loooooooong 22 months. Lots of fighting.

Crazy suggestion. Somehow convince Sheila Fraser to become the Liberal leader. Good luck to anyone who can create an attack ad against her.
