A Silver Lining

Joe Volpe went down to defeat. Apparently the dead wouldn't rise up to vote for him this time.  You want LPoC renewal, having him gone is a start.

Oh, and Lizzie May's another flash of sunlight in the gloom.  Frankly, I don't trust the NDP to treat enviro issues as anything but a frill.

Otherwise a crap night and one the Libs brought on themselves.  I am, incidentally, thinking about finally taking out a membership (I never have, though I've donated once or twice), if only to get close enough to bite a few people.

  1. You were told the decimation was coming.

  2. Important fact to consider from last night's election: a majority government can be won without Quebec. This is, to me at least, the story of the election.

  3. And with the loss for Volpe falls another constituency that the Liberal party has been ignoring...the hundreds of thousands of ItaloCanadians. The Italian caucus is now completely gone with the exception of Scarpalaggia and Valeriote. Thereto go Montreal and Toronto.

Also gone is the IndoCanadian caucus.

Awesome feat that we have become the party of the white man.

  4. Your not even a member of the Lberal party?

  5. Donated. Not a member. I am Liberalism embodied, and the party occasionally approximates my state.

Lizzie My hogged the entire green party effort to get elected and ignored the rest of the country.

The result is a token seat in parliament, way up in the back row nose bleeders and a drop of 40% of the Green popular vote.

And all that money from vote subsidies . . . at least for a few more months - we'll nuke that piece of crappy legislation right off the bat.

  7. I don't want to sound cruel, especially at this time but why wouldn't you support something you believe in? Lip service doesn't win will elections or pay the bills.

  8. Fred, you're right about May basically ignoring the rest of the country, but she needed to win a seat for the Greens or that would be her end as party leader.

Yes there is an uncertain future for that party now, but maybe she can establish a beachhead out on Vancouver Island, where there are a lot of environmentally conscious voters. Winning 6% of the popular vote is meaningless without at least 1 riding to show for it.

  9. Lots of ways to support, RnR. As I said, I've occasionally donated money. Also, once or twice material I've dug up has subsequently appeared in Lib news releases and etc. Pounding in signs and going door to door doesn't appeal to me. One good thing Iggy has done is to propose some form of one member one vote system (details to be hashed out, I think)for choosing LPoC leaders, so if I were to become a member now I could presumably e-vote on next leader.

  10. I'll also add that (until now at least) there was little point in campaigning in Toronto. Sending money was more beneficial.

I live in Toronto Centre - I could either knock on doors for the undefeatable Bob Rae, head a few blocks north and knock on them for the undefeatable Carolyn Bennett, or head east or west to campaign pointlessly against Jack Layton or Olivia Chow, neither of whom I'd ever want to see defeated anyway.

I'm not interested in the social aspects, going to conventions or rallies. My interest in politics consists primarily in defeating Conservatives.

  11. This can only be seen as a positive development for the Liberals. Seriously, that tumour should have been removed years ago. Ruby Dhalla and Mark Holland also gone. Every cloud has its silver lining. Not that I'm feeling any cloudiness whatsoever today. I'm shitting rainbows.
