Torys Anti-bullying Message Is Cheap-Assed Crap

So, when Kady O'Malley made note of this a few hours ago, I was prepared to be impressed.  In fact, I originally meant to title this post something like "Tories Show Some Class".  But, see, I first saw it with  sound off (Long story why).  Listening to it, I am far less impressed.  It resembles Stephane Dion's infamous hostage tape more than anything else, the problem in this case the fact that it seems to have been filmed on a cell phone during a hurricane.  And there's no excuse.  Mr. Harper and Co. have more money than God.  So they'll hire the CGI guys from Lord Of The Rings if they want to slime Michael Ignatieff, but anti-gay bullying efforts get the $1.99 treatment?  And could they not have got something a little more genuine out of Mr. Baird?

Actually, this is far more like it from Mr. Baird.  Formal statement --full weight of the gov. behind it.  Doesn't look like amateur hour.

  1. I hope this is tongue-in-cheek...

  3. Although I think the statement here:

    ...is much more appropriate.

  4. Perhaps it's just me - ironic to hear Baird speak out against bullying.

FYI - Baird's statement in the house was a response to a question about what the government was doing about bullying.

  5. If the Tories came down with a budget that had everything in it the Opposition wanted, bcl would be complaining it was printed on cheap paper.

  6. You have a point, Peter.

Nevertheless, you know if they'd wanted to trash somebody's rep they would have hired an orchestra, set off fireworks, and sent in blimps.

Gays get the "edgy" shit shot on a cellphone.

  7. Baird also stated in the House yesterday that Canada would be putting human rights for gays front and centre at the upcoming Commonwealth meeting in Australia.

But do carry on, we all know this must be just a feint for...something bad. We can't have the HarperCons doing anything right, can we?

  8. They have to prove themselves Peter. I look forward to hearing more about their Australian initiative. They may reveal themselves to be not entirely dicks yet. I keep an open mind.

  11. Baird appears to be about the only member of the CPoC caucus who will speak out positively on matters affecting GLBT people.

  12. If one looks at the now months-and-months-old "It Gets Better" campaign, a clear division appears: most of the messages are personal. One person talking openly and honestly about his or her experiences. Then there are many videos that are practically institutional, in which speakers recite scripted words of encouragement that have no connection to their own experiences or even their own behaviours. The problem with this Conservative party video (apart from the low quality of the production) is that there is absolutely no indication of personal involvement. Not only are all of the comments scripted, the speakers are all saying exactly the same thing, word for word in most cases. Why would anyone pay attention to a politician reading a script that he or she obviously had no involvement in writing?
