You are asking me? One thing I'll say is that this did not remind me of last year's Alberta polling cock-up. The B.C. NDP are not an untried bunch, and the charges of radicalism that were flung at them are par for the course in a B.C. election, so I can't see them having had much effect. If I were to guess, I would say the turning point came when Christy Clark came out against the Trans-Mountain pipeline, essentially mirroring the NDP "no-pipeline" stand and taking away their most important policy contrast. But I'm not even going to try to guess.
PS. Congrats to Andrew Weaver, the first Green Party MLA ever elected to the B.C. Legislature.
They lost it because Dix refused to fight. When you're up against the most corrupt, scandal-ridden, dishonest government in generations and you throw that advantage away to take the "high road" while the scummies go on a fear-mongering rampage against you, you're not even trying.
ReplyDeleteThe voters' well-stoked distrust of the NDP trumped their disgust with the Liberals. This was the biggest "hold your nose" election of them all. Apparently that's borne out by the voter turn out stats.
OTOH big win and congrats for Andrew Weaver!

ReplyDeleteCanada is a cesspool of corruption, especially since, Harper so called election win. BC is the most corrupt province in Canada. It is well known, the BC Liberals work for Harper. The BC Liberals are Harper's satellite party.
There are those who smell a rat, in Christy Clark's election win. They are already hunting for the rat.
That's nothing but bull shit. BC is not as corrupt as you make them out to be. BC Liberals do not work for Stephen Harper at all.
ReplyDeleteThey work for the citizens of British Columbia and that's a fact whether you want to believe it or not. The Liberals here in BC have listened to the people and that's a fact. Cristy Clark did not agree to the pipelines here in BC. She stated 5 points on what would have to happen but that's moot anyway.
The facts are that the federal government of the dictator Harper regime will be the ones who make the final decisions Such as it was when the Tar sands were opened up in by the Federal Liberals back in the early 80'sThe moratrum was lifted and Alberta prospered. If I though for a minute that CC would cave into Harper's plan, I would have voted for another party and it wouldn't have been for the Dippers. Green is where I would have gone. Obviously most BC voters felt the same as I did. They would have voted anybody but the Dippers and probably green would have been their next party of choice.
It so happens Christy has a lot of class and being shown with Harper meas nothing but having & showing class
What happened is 48% of the folks couldnt be bothered and sold the rest of BC up the river. The other problem is the folks who are committed to libs vote for anyone lib to avoid the dreaded NDP. but what kills me, is that the corruption the libs are( and have been) involved in, and the money they waste is way worse than fastcat ferries and anything Dix did over a decade ago. Dix also refused to fight negative, he thought it would garner him votes and he thought ( as did many of us) that the voters would remember the lib scandals.
ReplyDeleteso there goes BC hydro, here comes more corruption and byebye to any social improvements. What really annoys me is the folks who couldnt be bothered to vote:P
A Liberal voting co-worker told me he was voting Liberal because he "couldn't blame Clark for Campbell's mistakes". Swapping premiers = whole new party to him.
ReplyDeleteThe same - new leader - will likely happen here in Ontario, when the time comes.
