None of you Conservatives gave a good goddamn about immigrant integration until Big Daddy came to power and decided he was going to sell the Conservative "brand" to get their votes. Before that, most of you were just wailing about how the beige were destroying the fabric of Canada and that multiculturalism caused 9/11.
Your hypocrisy is the only thing consistent about you. Your willingness to change your minds as soon as your political masters tell you is most disturbing.
The Conservatives understand that an approach based on logic and policy is doomed -- they know voters make their decisions based on feelings, such as whether the party cares about them and their issues.
How said, and yet true, is that.
Our elections, more and more, are more akin to a Coca-Cola marketing campaign than any sincere effort to educate the public to make reasoned decisions.
Sorry, but the natural, normal reaction to hypocrisy is outrage.

I don't expect to get my education from political parties and campaigns. I don't know what most Conservatives do but I suspect that's part of the problem...at least when it comes to substantive issues of common interest.
I just don't understand why anyone would think patriotism is a "conservative value". I am patriotic and I am not conservative.
Indeed it is striking that until recently -- and sometimes still -- one was sometimes left with the impression that conservatives didn't actually like Canada very much.

Conservatives have always had a love of country as deep as anyones. What they've objected to is the reduction of citizenship to solely the concept of rights without any responsibilities.
TG.. "education" in the sense of asking "why would I vote for you other than the fact that you look good in a suit?
Can you say Danielle Smith?
In other words, we vote for people, Conservative, Liberal, NDP, or otherwise, so often for no particularly valid reason.. and the political parties pick that up and go with it.
So - the electoral process becomes something like selling soap, or maybe like three card monte.
Either way - it doesn't bode well for the long-term prospects for our democratic system. I mean - as happy as Conservatives are about the recent bi-election, look at the voter turn out.
This what they should teach in school, first. Our kids are left out when it comes to Canadian history.
ReplyDeleteI can't work up any outrage for this... it seems like a decent enough guide to the country for new citizens.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand why anyone would think patriotism is a "conservative value". I am patriotic and I am not conservative.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of journalist actually says that?
What kind of journalist actually says that?
ReplyDeleteA Conservative hack obviously.
John Ivison only got his citizenship four years ago?
ReplyDeleteI think it is a much better publication than "A Look at Canada".

Hey TiGuy, wipe the spittle from the corner of your mouth and stop painting with such a broad brush.
ReplyDeleteNothing of what you posted describes me, or most small c cons that I know.
Besides, all I said was that it was a better publication than the old "plant a tree" version.
So don't get all bent out of shape.

ReplyDeleteI just don't relate to this. I don't know anyone who thinks like this.
Must be a one-party state thing.
"What they've objected to is the reduction of citizenship to solely the concept of rights without any responsibilities."
ReplyDeleteThat would make sense if conservatives ever took responsibility for anything.
When is the last time you heard Harper apologize on his own behalf?
