I agreed with your original prediction, and I was frankly quite surprised to see Layton reject the budget like he did, given all the NDP goodies in there. He could have looked like the guy who "made parliament work", which seems to be his favourite slogan.

The Cons might be fine with the government falling. But that might be due to a rumour they've already made certain there aren't enough Cons available to win the vote Friday.
