As readers may remember, Peter Gleick is the hydroclimatologist who suckered the Heartland Institute out of some of their budget documents, which act has, directly or indirectly, resulted in HI's losing $100,000s in funding from its corporate sponsors. After Mr. Gleick's identity was revealed, rumors swirled re lawsuits and possible charges laid against him. Well, this morning, responding to an inquiry of mine, I received a short email from Ross Rice of the Chicago FBI, which I have excerpted below:
While we do ask for the public's assistance with many cases, we generally do NOT detail what we might be investigating unless or until an arrest is made or charges are filed. As such, I can tell you that no arrests have been made nor have any criminal charges been filed in the Northern District of Illinois against Peter Gleick.
Regards,
SA Ross Rice

Hard to imagine anything coming of this now. Presumably the police don't believe the nonsense HI is trying to pass off as evidence of wrongdoing.
In what way is it "nonsense"? In both being apparently true and showing evident criminal activity, it appears to be thorough sense.
ReplyDeleteGleick clearly did much wrong. What he has admitted to is criminal (and inane - it showed no malfeasance on any part but Gleick's) and shows poor reflexive judgement. What he evidently did, in faking the memo, is thoroughly dishonest, and discredits everything he does and has ever done. That he still denies it, despite the overwhelming evidence shows arrogance, poor judgement even with plenty of time to think and continued dishonesty.
The incontrovertible evidence that he did write the memo is statistical. Every part of the memo that was actually true came from the few documents he had. Every part of the memo not in those papers was clearly written by a warmist, with a warmist's bigoted view of sceptics. To suggest that someone else guessed what Gleick would do with the memo, found what documents he might be able to get hold of, acquired the same documents and wrote the fake memo is credulous even for a warmist.
If you think Gleick is right in his science you should be furious with him, as he now has no credibility. He has exposed the widespread dishonesty of the warmists for all to see.
The faking the memo stuff is nonsense, and Gleick already seems to have already lined up a few speaking engagements.
ReplyDeleteI agree that charges are unlikely, but the statement isn't really evidence of that. They still have plenty of time if they decided they wanted to file - it's not like they're dealing with someone dangerous that they need to get off the streets.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is they're totally uninterested, or that they're waiting to see if something more turns up. But I wouldn't conclude too much just from the statement.
