A Quick Note On First Batch Of OLPLDR Protesters

Unfortunately, I'm having troubles emailing pictures from my new tablet (piece of crap just like old tablet, as it happens) to my netbook, but Jeff posted one.  The race horse farmers are here protesting  the end of the Slots at Racetracks Initiative.  I counted about 20 to 30.  Not that many, and remember: when they get too old to race these horses become glue or are sold  to  restaurants, where they are made delicious.

Tomorrow I might wander over to Edwards Gardens where the anti-wind people are protesting (I think).  I want to see how many bodies they bring out, or are they the same old gang as always?

The Barrie Examiner has a real weeper about the fate of the Ontario horse-racing industry if the McGuinty Gov.  eliminates the slots-at-tracks agreement.  It ends with:

“It is a grim situation. If these horses aren’t making the owners money, they’ll have to sell them,” he [Essa Township horseman Stephen Byron] said. “What are we going to do with these horses? It could snowball and in the worst-case scenario, they could go to slaughter.”

If they go to slaughter, Mr. Byron, I'll be happy to eat 'em.  One of my favorite youthful memories is of chowing down on horse steaks in France.  Very lean, very rare...you can almost hear them neigh.  But if we must talk compromise, I would be OK if the McGuinty Libs just reduced the government handout to Ontario racetracks rather than killing them entirely.  The rural types that depend on such government largess should be eased off their entitlements rather than being forced to go cold pony... I mean turkey.  Bah Hah!

Meanwhile, jobs at the horserace track are the only ones Joe Warmington has ever wanted to save.  When Rob Ford moved to cut T.O. cops, he was not half so aggrieved.

My own opinion?  Horsemeat is awesome!  That's what you get when you get steak in France, where I first had it.  Its like beefsteak but without an ounce of fat on it.  And the French serve it so rare that if you aren't hungry you can sill pretty much race 'em.

Meanwhile, Hudak was going to take a position on the issue, but in the end he just waffled.

NEAR NEUDORF, SASK. -- At the end of a remote gravel road in southern Saskatchewan's Qu'Appelle Valley is the next target in a growing movement to rid North America of its horse slaughterhouses.

Horse advocates in both Canada and the United States are outraged that this vast green valley, lush and rolling, is now home to this country's newest federally licensed horse abattoir: Natural Valley Farms Inc.

They are also concerned that even more Canadian companies may start slaughtering and processing horses in a bid to satisfy hungry overseas markets that crave horsemeat, a pricey delicacy in many countries, since the industry is headed for extinction in the United States.
"This is all happening under the radar. Ask most people, and they have no idea that horses are even slaughtered in Canada for meat," said Shelley Grainger, director of the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition's eastern region.

I suppose I should be more upset over this. However, a long time ago when I was in France I ate horse meat steak on a number of occasions and loved it. Its very lean and of course the French do it up ultra rare. Lip-smackingly good stuff.

Also, when I was a child my mom worked at an experimental farm outside of Base Borden. One day as I was feeding mints to one of their horses, it bit me and I fell into a ditch filled with horse-shit wearing my best new shoes. So I have issues.

PS. Speaking of French Cuisine, I saw Ratatouille yesterday and give it two thumbs up.
