Today, we get a grovelling apology out of the Irving-owned Telegraph Journal re wafer-gate. In addition, the names of the newspaper’s editor, Shawna Richer, and the publisher, Jamie Irving, are off the masthead in this morning's edition. Quite odd, as there is at least some independent evidence that Harper did not in fact eat the communion wafer immediately, and unless Monsignor Brian Henneberry, vicar general and chancellor in the Diocese of Saint John, was wildly mis-quoted, then both of the statements the TJ has retracted have at least some support.
Stephen Taylor suggests that TJ reporters Rob Linke and Adam Huras threatened legal action against their own paper. It occurs to me, though, that its just as likely the Tories are applying legal pressure to an Irving owned newspaper as a means of getting its shipbuilders to fall in line.
