CBSC Dings CTV

From the release:

Ottawa, August 7, 2013 - The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) today released its decision concerning news reports broadcast on CTV News Channel on February 25, 2013.  Two reports erroneously stated that a Palestinian man being detained in an Israeli prison had been participating in a hunger strike when he died.  The CBSC concluded that the station broadcast inaccurate information contrary to the Codes of Ethics of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) and the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada (RTDNA).  It also concluded that the error should have been corrected on television because that is where the error occurred.

From the decision itself, re the bolded last line of the release:

The Panel commends CTV News Channel for quickly correcting the error on its website, but Article 7 of the RTDNA Code of Ethics clearly requires broadcasters to correct errors “on all platforms”.  The Panel agrees with the complainant’s contention that if an error is broadcast on television, the correction of that error should also be broadcast on television.  CTV News Channel’s failure to do so constitutes a breach of Article 7 of the RTDNA Code of Ethics. 2

This strikes me as a bit superfluous; even if the broadcast containing CTV's correction is preserved on their website, the odds of someone stumbling upon it, and thus being corrected, are pretty small.  Whereas any correction to a web-story will remain at the bottom of the story forever and be seen whenever the story is accessed.  I suspect that's what CTV would have argued.

Your Daily Nazi: Shame On CTV

There are many points you can argue over Canada's response to the Tamil migrants. But you really shouldn't, as CTV did, put Paul Fromm on national television (see vid through link) and let him spout off like he's a normal person. He isn't; here is what he is. And, more specifically, here's a nice little story from just a few days ago about Paul's protesting the arrival of the Sun Sea, with the freakin' Aryan Guard, in front of Jason Kenney's office, no less.

CTV has really screwed up on this one: at least some background on the man behind "Canada First" should have been provided; it isn't like he's an unknown quantity.

CTV Paying Bourque To Torque?

Every link given in the above goes back to CTV's campaign to charge "carriage fees" to the cable companies, or to its pro-carriage fee petition. I of course did not sign the petition, but a friend did:

And So What Did We Learn?

1) For a Leader of his immense gloriousness, Stephen Harper makes some very poor hiring decisions.
2) The CTV newsroom looks like NASA's Space Center.
3) I say "uhm" too much, and either the camera adds more than ten pounds or the gals in the CTV makeup department threw in a double-chin for laughs.
4) Some of the youth of today don't know that "cash" and "cache" are different words. Otherwise they are very sweet.
5) The only thing I would pass off as (possibly) wisdom in the whole episode:

Murphy said the swift reaction has shown the power of blogs in elections, but he said it also revealed something about the vetting process for candidates.

"This guy was never gonna win," he said. "And so one of the things that I've been doing is looking at the no-hopers on the premise that they're not vetted that deeply. But if they're not vetted deeply, and something comes up, it's going to embarrass the campaign on a national level."

As such, he compared it to the controversy involving pot-smoking and the NDP. On Wednesday, NDP candidate Dana Larsen dropped out of the election after he was shown in old video lighting joints, taking LSD and driving while "flying," as he said in a video.
