Wildrose Alliance Takes Stab At Centrism
Not quite sure what this means
And it stepped back from demanding that Section 3 of the Alberta human rights code (which deals with publications and free speech) be axed. Some Wildrose supporters, Tory MLAs and other groups believe Section 3 of the act is providing unjust censorship powers to the Alberta Human Rights Commission, a quasi-judicial agency.
Instead, Wildrose members voted to amend the human rights act to "unequivocally protect" freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
...because details aren't up yet on the Wildrose Alliance website: could the section be left in the code but amended around until it was made irrelevant? Dunno. But its interesting that even the Alberta Right has figured out that to adopt the pure Speechy philosophy is to risk being dubbed kooks and racists.
Also shows how utterly dear Ezra is estranged from his own province.

Walls Starting To Fall In Alta.?

The PC party will only be in real trouble, and MLAs could leave more readily, if riding workers themselves start sliding over to the Wildrose Alliance.
...Peter Braid finds a couple of riding workers sliding over to the Wildrose Alliance:
...now the mayor of Bonnyville, Ernie Isley, has joined the Wildrose Alliance, along with an outspoken town councillor named Gene Sobolewski. For good measure, so has a former Tory MLA named Doug Cherry, who used to represent Lloydminster and now lives in Calgary.
"Too many things have happened with the leader," says Cherry, MLA from 1986 to 1993. "I just can't support him any longer.
My opinion: Alberta politics is sick and needs some kind of shaking up. Whether a party further to the right of the Alta. Tories is the answer, I don't know. I note that, back in her Global T.V. days, Danielle M. Smith, the WAP's likely new leader, was one of Steve McIntyre's biggest media pimps.
So that's obviously not good.

Update: Tory Rebellion in Alta. Not On?
The smooth operation of the Tory colossus has been a lifelong passion for thousands of Albertans. They run the riding associations, staff the campaigns, party together, marry each other, go crazy with joy when they win again.
Every Tory MLA is supported by a group like that. Leaving the gang that helped you get elected is an incredibly difficult thing to do.

Braid considers it far more likely that rank and filers would abandon the Tory leader rather than the Tory party. The event to watch, therefore, is November's vote on Stelmach's performance as head of the Alberta Conservatives, not October's Wildrose Alliance Party leadership convention, which will (presumably) result in a victory by Danielle Smith.

WAP Leadership Wannabe Endorsed By Rural Separatist
Mark Dyrholm is one of the two candidates left in the race for leader of the upstart Wildrose Alliance Party, who may or may not be set to upend politics as usual in Alberta. I have noted his ties to Western Separatist organizations here and elsewhere.
Randy Hillier is an Ontario MPP in Tim Hudak's PCPO opposition, and one-time leadership Candidate for the PCPO. He has advocated in the past that rural Ontario should secede from the urban South. He also has a thing for creepy red suspenders. Now these two...
