Maybe We Owe Paul Hellyer An Apology
Paul Hellyer is a Pearson era cabinet minister who has received some notoriety and much ridicule in recent years for his embrace of Exo-politics (he believes, among other things, that UFOs have shot down U.S. jet fighter jetss). The telegram is what it appears to be: in 1924 Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, Edward W. Eberle, instructed all Naval stations to monitor the airwaves for any unusual transmissions due to anticipated contact from Martians. He also appealed to astronomers to monitor the skies for Martian radio transmissions. Things were different back then.

Former Defence Minister Paul Hellyer Speaks
...on a possible Liberal-NDP merger:
It is with a heavy heart that I have come to the conclusion that the Liberal and New Democratic Parties should merge and become one entity known as the Liberal Democratic Party of Canada. I am convinced that it would be in the best long-term interests of both parties but, far more important, it would be in the best interests of Canada. Canadians deserve a clear choice when they next vote.
On little green men from outer space:
I wish I were in a mood for good humour, but I am not. We are hell-bent in the direction of destroying our planet, and we appear to be doing precious little about it. Decades ago visitors from other planets warned us about where we were headed, and offered to help. But instead, we, or at least some of us, interpreted their visits as a threat, and decided to shoot first and ask questions afterward. The inevitable result was that some of our planes were lost; but how many were due to retaliation, and how many were a result of our own stupidity is a moot point.
Not that I have an issue with NDP/merger discussions, though they ain't gonna happen any time soon. Just sayin'.

Missiles Over Manitoba?
This:
...looks very much like this:
When the rocket motor spun out of control, it likely created the heavenly spiral of white light near where the missile was launched from a submarine in the White Sea.
The bow-shaped path taken by the object looks to me like an object re-entering at a too shallow angle and deflecting off the atmosphere back towards space.
Such things can happen.

Ezra Invokes The Elders Of Zion
Apparently, they're the ones that stepped in and got Kinsella fired from the CJC:
That letter is an after-the-fact attempt at spin by Kinsella. In February, he threatened to blackball and bad-mouth the Canada-Israel Committee, a sister organization to the Canadian Jewish Congress. The Jewish community's central advocacy agency ordered Kinsella off the CJC. He asked to 'resign' instead of being fired, just to save face. But fired he was.
Yo Ez, who exactly is on the Jewish community's central advocacy agency? Freud? Jesus? Wittgenstein? Ron Jeremy? And do they live on UFOs over the Jewish quarter of Montreal, or what? And as a non-Jew, can I join? Do I get a cash card that never runs out? What's the deal?

Pearson's Defense Minister: UFOs Have Shot Down American Fighter Planes
Paul Hellyer kicks off the fourth annual Exo-Politics Institutes X-Fest with a blistering speech re exposing the UFO conspiracy.
I wish I were in a mood for good humour, but I am not. We are hell-bent in the direction of destroying our planet, and we appear to be doing precious little about it. Decades ago visitors from other planets warned us about where we were headed, and offered to help. The inevitable result was that some of our planes were lost; but how many were due to retaliation, and how many were a result of our own stupidity is a moot point.
It would be even more hilarious if he was an ex-Tory minister but, unfortunately, Hellyer's a Pearson era Defense Minister, and this is his second appearance at X-Fest.
For more on the Exo-Politics Institute, which funds X-Fest, try this, or check out their website.
For more on the "exo-politics" promoted by Paul and the gang, especially in its Canadian context, see this post in which Exo Politics Toronto PR guy Victor Viggiani asks Excellency Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean to come clean re the cover-up.
She tells him to take his concerns to CSIS.
Update: Ti-guy notes that Hellyer was Defense Minister for Pearson, not Trudeau, as the post originally stated.

Not A Right-Wing Front Group, Just Kooks
The folks at A Creative Revolution have bad things to say about The Canadian: Canada's new socially progressive and cross-cultural national newspaper:
A "progressive" news organization that would accept and use quotes from [Jerome] Corsi? Corsi the racist who also writes on Human events .com with that other peice of crap Ann Coulter? The same Corsi who maligns all of Islam, Left wingers and all things liberal?
That tells me that "The Canadian" is either operated by extremely stupid, STOOPID people and REALLY bad writers who cannot be bothered to even use teh google, or its a purposeful sham operated by Right Wing extremists. I think the latter.
Well, I think the former. All of the websites associated with The Canadian are the work of Raymond Samuels, head of the Cosmopolitan Party of Canada, who has actually run in a couple of Federal elections, winning around 125 votes in the Ottawa area each time. One of TC's regular contributors, Victor Viggiani is director of media relations for Exopolitics Canada, and the man behind last August's open letter requesting that:
Her Excellency Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean in her May 30, 2007 response to a May 17, 2007 correspondence from Exopolitics Toronto has suggested a specified course of action be taken by us to communicate with the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service to ascertain the state of concern in Ottawa regarding the UFO/ET phenomenon in Canada.
So they are sincere about UFO's. As to the quotes from right-wing sources, well CT tends to go pretty far afield in its quest for "evidence", and Viggiani has also attempted to use Judi Mcleod from Canada Free Press to get his message out. Tells you something that Canadian UFO cultists see Ms. Mcleod as a sort of kindred spirit.
So, crazy? Yes. Conservative extremists? No. Lets not get insulting.

GG Says Talk To CSIS Re UFOs
An open letter from Victor Viggiani, Director of Media Relations for Exopolitics Toronto, to Prime Minister Harper. My favorite bit:
Her Excellency Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean in her May 30, 2007 response to a May 17, 2007 correspondence from Exopolitics Toronto has suggested a specified course of action be taken by us to communicate with the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service to ascertain the state of concern in Ottawa regarding the UFO/ET phenomenon in Canada.
I guess responding to nutters is part of the GG's job description. Mr. Viggiani also wants Harper to "open Parliamentary Hearings" into this issue, and
...announce to Parliament, to the people of Canada and the world of the existence of radically new energy sources that will eliminate the need for fossil fuels, and of the existence of technologies capable of transforming the planet’s environmental chaos into an era of new solutions and environmental sustainability.
Not a chance; Harper's in the pocket of the big oil companies, who would be put out of business by this advanced alien technology.

News You Can Abuse
Look out Natty Post; look out, Mop and Pail. Your competition has arrived. There's a new national (on-line newspaper) in town. It's called The Canadian and it boasts of being both "socially progressive" and "cross cultural".
This week's lead story is "Roman Catholic Church Vatican Insider leaks Information about an Extraterrestrial Presence", which details
... inside information about a clandestine meeting in 1954 at California’s Muroc Air Force Base (later named Edwards AFB) involving President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Los Angeles Bishop James Francis McIntyre and an extraterrestrial delegation.
Other ground-breaking stories include "Ancient Gnostic disciples of Jesus reveal reasons for Extraterrestrial Denial in Western society", an analysis of why mainstream science continues to deny "the historical and on-going existence of Extraterrestrial contact with human beings on Earth"; a discussion of the NDP's capitulation to "transnational union interests"; news of a software program that helps you to seduce women (I've already ordered my copy); a profile of
U.F.O expert and once-Deputy Prime Minister Paul Hellyer (do you see a theme emerging?); an item on how the Tory spin machine has played the PM's Afghanistan visit; predictions of global climate catastrophe by a guy who submitted his dissertation to Tony Blair (Tony Blair liked it!); and "Home buying tips for homebuyers".
This is surely the news as BigCityLib would tell it, and The Canadian will definitely become one of the regular stops on my daily walk through the on-line media world. In fact, I'm not sure it will be necessary to read another newspaper, ever again.

Ezra Levant Say: Saskatchewan Like Cuba
In the midst of his latest ramble, which drifts in topic from Saskatchewan's problems to the perils of immigration, Ezra takes time out to praise Saskatchewan Party leader Brad Wall's vision for the province:
A Wall [election] win could trigger a massive re-investment and reinvigoration of that province. Think of what Cuba could be like if it were ever to throw off the Castro regime and welcome its wealthy expatriates back from Miami.
Well, I don't think Ezra is suggesting that Brad Wall would invite the elderly dregs of the Batista regime to Regina in the event of a Saskatchewan Party victory, but its a disturbing sentiment nevertheless. And if Mr. Wall shares Ezra's feelings about the residents of Saskatchewan (they're mind-controlled commie slaves), I hope he has the honesty to campaign on his beliefs come election time.
Far be it for me to tell my Saskatchewanese brothers and sisters how to vote, but if it were up to me, I would elect this guy. He's been seen around the province enough lately that he's gotta be running for something.
