This is good populist politics. This a load of crap, of the same kind that's been slung alot the past couple of days. Normal people like the GG, would love to see her term extended, and would therefore have no trouble with Iggy making that suggestion. If Harper is so eager to see her gone, then let him explain why. Iggy's made more than a few mistakes lately, but the reaction to this has been so over-the-top that I'm inclined to think Canadian pundits, led in this case by Andrew Coyne and his frothing at the mouth on Sunday, have gone a bit mad.
In this case, I think they can safely be ignored.

From what we saw, Layton also got the same letter but he didn't turn it into a political football. I guess Iggy is so desperate to raise his approval rating, he'll do anything.
Optics is everything...and Iggy blew it.
While I certainly agree Michaëlle Jean should stay, I feel obligated to point out that Helena Guergis is now available.
Yeah I must admit that I was surprised at the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this move by Iggy. Its very much "inside baseball" as far as Im concerned and whether or not Iggy 'politicized the GG' or whatnot, Michaelle Jean has served with distinction, and I wouldnt expect her to do any differently if she served an extra two years.
It seems though that Iggy has broken some kind of unwritten rule, and along with his other recent blunders, he's just become an easy target.
That's why I dont think he's the Liberal savior. And as much as I enjoy seeing the Liberals way behind in the polls, my advice to them is that they need a leader who's more of a Jean Chretien (politically experienced, sure of himself, somewhat politically incorrect and charismatic).
I recall seeing JC not too long ago on "Tout le monde en parle" - what a pro! Smooth like butter, funny, interesting... About a million miles away from the politically correct panderers like PM and MI, or the nerdy loser SD.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
L. Ian MacDonald (I call him Mr. Drooly) is on a mission - to push for everything Harper does - I think he has a man-crush on him. He's also buddies with Mr. Not-Credible - Mike Duffy.
Personally, I like to idea of being upfront and not being secretive - it's 2010 folks.
Ridenrain - yup, get on that bandwagon as if Harper hasn't played political football. Harper lobbied against Romeo LeBlanc as GG and he made negative statements when Jean was appointed.
I think we should know how all political leaders feel about it. Who would Layton pick? A union leader?
dont let the facts get in the way of your usual flawed arguments Ridenrain.
Maybe you can help Leeky Sweek with his grammar.
Cheap partisan politics should be left out of the selection of the GG. That Harper, unlike many previous PMs, sought the private advice of opposition leaders should have been respected by those leaders. Not Iggy though.
I appreciate your steadfast support of Ignatieff BCL, but I fear it will all be for naught.
As one pundit opined, the Liberals appear hell bent on following 'The Red Book to self-annihilation'.
a pundit said, a little birdie told me. Facts Paul S or its just more anecdotal hot air.
RNR and Paul S. Yes, I know who your dream candidate is: it's Preston Manning, idn't it?
Now who's politicizing GG?
In regards to Canadian politics, Iggy is simply tone-deaf. He has proved it time and again, starting back in 2006 when he blew the leadership race while stumbling on Mideast politics and Quebecois nationalism.
The Cons are busy playing circle-the-wagons-and-shoot-inwards ... so of course Iggy goes and generates stupid, distracting headlines about the AG and the GG.
Meanwhile he is caving on the 2-week deadline gift horse he has been given.
what a clusterf**k
What can we expect from a man who has very little experience in Canadian politics.
I like the Idea of a first nation GG. I think that time has come. Their are hundreds of people that would bring great things to the post and 2 more years just takes time from the next person to shine.
"What can we expect from a man who has very little experience in Canadian politics."
Hmm what can we expect from Ridenrain's comments besides tired old talking points and ol'man bluster. Seriously ridenrain, that comment sucks even for you.
Why don't you go off and think of something for a change. Or at least check your fax machine for your latest thoughts.
Iggy is practising open and transparent politics..nothng more nothing less. He's delivering on the Torys' promise they failed miserably at.
