MP Maurice Vellacott: Saskatoon Doctors Should Be Commended For Reducing The Availability of Abortion Services

“The bottom line is that the decline in the availability of abortion services is directly linked to a growing commitment to the medical evidence of what abortion does and how abortion negatively impacts the lives of women. Saskatoon’s doctors should be commended for the leadership they are showing by reducing the availability of abortion in our city...."

From a news release posted to his website last evening. I guess this begs the question: are Saskatoon Doctors inappropriately imposing their moral values on their patients? Both the original Star Phoenix article and Vellacott's congratulatory press release suggest that this is the case.

And another nice quote:

Pro-life feminists have also come to see abortion as part of a male agenda to have women more sexually available.

Just three points off a majority, folks.

From the communiqué:

Aborted women tell stories of being badgered, harassed and coerced into getting their abortion by boyfriends, partners, parents, employers, or other unsupportive circumstances.

"Aborted women?" "...harassed and coerced by...unsupportive circumstances?"

Creepy, wormy, pre-literate Maurice Vellacott.

I really do believe this man's IQ is well below the mean.

So, apparently women aren't capable of making their own decisions?

Sometimes they get their abortion without telling anyone they're pregnant.

Ah yes, the women are being coerced into getting abortions... the solution is to take away the choice of having an abortion! Funny that Vellacott isn't as concerned about coercing women into not having abortions.

The only coercion I've seen are these grievance-mongers ladling on the guilt long after it's too late to do anything.

Christ, listening to them quite often makes *me* feel bad for having an abortion.

No, the doctors are imposing a moral (kind of) value on themselves in that they aren't comfortable going past the 12 week stage.

And is that generally the type of behaviour we should expect from medical doctors who, I remind you, are only allowed to practice with the consent of the people expressed through our elected representatives and the regulations they implement? Cavalier judgments on moral propriety?

Even their self-regulating bodies don't generally support that, Paulie Precious.

Anyway, more power to drugs like RU-486. DIY is the best way to go.

Incorrect. It is voluntary for doctors to perform abortion. No authority or regulations can compel any doctor to perform abortions.

Any doctor compelled to violate their ethical beliefs would simply withdraw any provision of abortion.

And RU-486 doesn't even come into the equation since the issue is abortion past the 12 week stage.

Too bad Vellacott's mother didn't have one.

That's not what I asserted. I simply brought that up as a reminder that certain professions are not governed solely by the dictates of personal morality.

How would your mother have felt had the doctor she consulted refused, on moral grounds, to correct that little problem of gonadal mosaicism you were born with?

I think eventually we'll get the DIY D&C:

"The Abortamax 3000...Tell the busybodies to go stick their noses in someone else's crotch."

idn't MP Maurice Vellacott actually rape and kill a girl in 1990?

I don't know for certain that MP Maurice Vellacott raped and killed a girl in 1990, I just know that people say MP Maurice Vellacott raped and killed a girl in 1990.

If it's not true, why won't he deny these allegations?
