Its Come To This...

The PMO says Prime Minister Stephen Harper will issue an edict to his ministers, reminding them that they're not above the law.

Divas everywhere, in this government.

I hope you are including the men as well in your statement.

I am. Is there a different word for male divas?

There are several. While you're looking them up, I suggest finding a different word for 'law' as well, since the Conservative cabinet ministers you mentioned haven't actually broken any laws...

Tell the PMO, Fred. That's a (n indirect) quote.

Boy, is Fred ever stupid.

Dana said...

Fred's not stupid. He's just following orders. Aren't you Fred?

Dana, for Fred to follow orders like that he has to be stupid

A diva (English pronunciation: /ˈdiːvə/, Italian: [ˈdiːva]) is a celebrated female singer. The term is used to describe a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, and by extension in theatre, cinema and popular music. The meaning of diva is closely related to that of "prima donna".

The word entered the English language in the late 19th century. It is derived from the Italian noun diva, a female deity. The plural of the word in English is "divas"; in Italian, dive [ˈdiːve]. The basic sense of the term is "goddess",[1][2] the feminine of the Latin word divus (Italian divo), a male deity.
The male divo does exist in Italian and it is usually reserved for the most prominent leading tenors, like Enrico Caruso or Beniamino Gigli. The Italian term divismo describes the Star system.

So there - the male version is "divo"

That Fred's just following orders is a claim I can't verify. But that Fred is stupid is easily supported by what he's written here.

C'mon guys...that's just science.

The web is chock-a-block with good Harperites doing their best to loyally do their master's bidding, even when they don't have any clear instructions as to what that bidding may be.

That they appear stupid while doing it is deceptive.

We presume stupidity where malevolence would be the more empowering presumption.

Ti-Guy said...

Ah, the old mystery. Stupid or evil?

I'm still struggling with that one.

Frankly, Harper was much more principled when he headed the National Citizen's coalition. Today he's just a Liberal in Conservative clothing.

Let's hope Mike Harris decides to take a shot at federal politics. Then we might see a return to real Tory values.

bigcitylib said...

Oh...let us hope. I say that as a hyper-partisan Liberal.

Dana said...

Yes, Gerry, let's hope for that.

I've always wanted Canada to be amalgamated into one big, broken, impoverished mega-city.

Idjit.

Ti-Guy...we're well past the point of being able to comfortably continue to presume Harper's level of support is based solely on stupidity.

Something else is afoot here as well.

There is an operational malevolence toward what Canada had evolved into during the 20th century.

They hate that we were a secular nation, that women were being treated as though they had the right to determine their own biology, that gay people were increasingly considered equal citizens, that science was funded and respected irrespective of findings, that respect for personal freedoms was taking precedence over religious dogma, that citizens dared once to imagine that they paid taxes in exchange for services rendered and not for the government to allocate to war, secrecy and the security state. And so on and so on.

They're actively engaged in the process of reversing much of that and have already achieved quite a lot. Canada is not now the nation it was pre 2005 and the pace of the alteration is quickening.

I consider that to be evidence more of malevolence than of stupidity.

Stupidity is ever present and will always be with us.

Malevolence on the other hand can be fought.

Sorry for the high-jack, BCL.

@Dana...perfect. I'm stealing your words...with attribution of course. Thanks.

double nickel I'm going to regret that aren't I?

Thank FSM there's only one "t".

Dana

That was really good.

I had it chalked up to stupidity.

Then I started to realize there were other forces in play.

I guess there is that segment of society, who are clearly angry, and resentful of everything.

Naturally they find a home in the CPC.

They practice politics of fear and division.

Saner, cooler heads have to prevail in the end.

As for Fred, he has been extremely busy today. He has earned his pay cheque.

"… Harper will issue an edict …"
Issuing edicts comes naturally to Stevie. No messy nuisances like public debate when your preferred method of governing is government by fiat. Stevie may owe his vision to his personal tutor Flanagan and his various pastors through the years, but he learned his governing style from former Prince Ralph. Why bother with debate, discussion or communication when I can simply proclaim what is and is not appropriate for the plebs?

Oh, and well stated Dana.
