Polaris Institute As NDP Shills

The game , sponsored by The Polaris Institute, is a good bit of fun: hose down Iggy and Harper with gouts of gooey black oil. But tell me why Jack Layton isn't in there someplace? Can anybody name one thing Jack has actually done to help the green cause? In fact, the NDP is renowned for selling out its enviro wing at the drop of an auto-worker's beer mug: examples are trivially easy to uncover.

Your clip from E-May is from 2 years ago! This is the best you've got to attack the NDP? Sheeesh ... must be time for me to do another post on Iggy calling for political assassination and torture!!

Layton doesn't come to Alberta and suck up to the oil junkies like Ignatieff does. Layton has a nice green house, didn't you watch Rick Mercer?

But I shot Harperf more than Ignatieff, though they both got pretty wel covered with oil. Fun game.

Harper definitely makes funnier faces when you hit him.

I keep aiming for what looks like the Calgary skyline in the background, but it's not a legitimate target.

Don't tell me you need a reason to write hit pieces on Liberals. You're slipping. Please report to Dipper Central for a re-infusion of Marxist high dudgeon.

Equating the New Democratic Party with Marxism displays either a very bad sense of humour or a complete lack of reality. I'm going to guess it is just misguided, right wing humour attempt.

What? No door number three?

How stingy.

The reason Iggy and Harper share exclusively the honour of being tarred in the game is that they`ve both, um... been vocal supporters of unrestricted tar sands development. It`s really not any more or less complicated.

The NDP under Layton, by contrast, like the Bloc and Greens, has consistently called for a moratorium on new Tar Sands developments.

Many Albertans actually share this concern, hence the NDP holding the only non-Tory seat in that beautiful province in the person of the inimitable Linda Duncan.

You may recall Iggy voluntarily and forcefully defended the tar sands and even took a swipe or two at its many critics when on a Western swing last year.

As for the `Green Shift` talking point, the NDP and Liberals had a good faith disagreement on the merits of a tax vs. a strict cap and trade regime, both measures intended to price carbon and drive market innovation. It was politics, nothing more nothing less.

It`s not like the Liberal record in Government gives them much right to be indignant on environmental files.

Since the election of 2008, though, even our distinguished host would likely agree that Layton has kept up the fight, pushing C-311, a historic Bill which imposes the first binding emmissions reduction targets in Canadian history. Many Liberals even support it, at least privately. To their credit, some even voted their conscience.

The Liberal leadership under Mr. Ignatieff, by contrast, I think you`ll also agree, has moved in the opposite direction, advocating unrestricted expansion of the tar sands at home and abroad.

We can debate politics and personality all day long, but this is a pretty cut and dry issue. Polaris isn`t a shill for the NDP, just for sound environmental policy that they don`t see forthcoming from the Liberal or Conservative Party`s present leadership.

From Tories, this is no surprise. From the Liberal Party, it`s rather dissappointing.

Hope this adequately explains why Iggy and the PM share the progressive humbrage as they do on so many contemporary issues. If we want to talk shills, let`s wait for this weekend in Montréal.

Thanks as always for the space, BCL.

Yes, all 5-7% of them that vote Green. And you're dreaming if you think Duncan was elected due to the NDP's environmental policies. It think it has more to do with Edmonton-Strathcona being the poorest per capita riding in Alberta.

Layton pushing for an election right on top of COP 11 was not well received in the enviro community. It played right into Harper's agenda.

Having never been in power federally, we still don't know how well the fed NDP enviro commitments stand up. it's easier to be holier-than-though when you don't have to ever prove yourself.

But, yes, the Conservatives and the Liberals certainly deserve an oil bath.

Great! reading the divisiveness on this comment board, simply reminds me why Stevie and the Harpercons remain successful.

Elroy, the con troll seems to be the only one amused here. Why wouldn't he be? This bickering helps his man get in with a majority in the next election.

Just sayin'...
