Wayne LaPierre Is Sooo Happy

As my friend and colleague Dave Kopel, research director of the Independence Institute in Colorado, astutely noted, "Repeal of the Canadian registry would be of tremendous global significance. Repeal would also shatter the claim by the Canadian gun prohibition lobby that gun control in Canada is an irreversible ratchet."

This is huge on the world stage and made all the more significant as a backdrop in the pending debate on the United Nations' global gun ban.

Wayne LePierre, author of the above, is EVP of the National Rifle Association. It's worth noting that he thinks Bill C-391 will pass 3rd reading with roughly the same votes it got last time around.

As a taxpaying Canadian who doesn't own a gun and who likely will never own a gun..

I'm happy too.

One positive act of our government is better than nothing, I suppose.

Yeah, because the fact that fewer people are committing suicide via long guns or shooting their spouses with their rifles since the start of the registry are some of the reasons this damn registry needs to come down.

Freedom comes at a price people. Be prepared to pay.

(Yes, I'm being sarcastic.)

A gun has yet to be convicted of killing anyone. The people who want to kill will find a way. It is impossible to ban all means . Perhaps better recognition and treatment of mental illness has reduced the suicides. It is a big leap to blame a long gun. The money spent has to have a more effective use. My father is a 60+ year old cattle farmer with a coyote problem. Thanks to govt's of the past he is now a criminal for protecting his animals. He does not believe in the registry and Just as people are entitled to protest prorougation?? his protest is to not follow an unfair law. The Lib party of toronto can come get him if they even know where this peice of the earth is. Good luck with expanding your support in the west if you push this any further. If you keep narrowing your base by alienating sectors of society. Not small sectors but large vocal and donating sectors your ceiling will just get lower and lower 26% anybody?

This bureaucratic vampire needs to be killed once and for all. Sheila Fraser called it out in 2002 and it's still just an ideologically driven boondoggle.

Note to wingnuts: Please say something about this issue the rest us of us *don't* already know you'll say.

Thenk yew.

If you keep threatening us like that, don't come crying to us when the World decides it doesn't need your dirty oil for the foreseeable future.

Still plenty of cheaper, cleaner oil available elsewhere, after all.

Oh, please. Everything's ideologically driven. Why not call for the abolishment of the car registration or the birth registry? These things touch on more people's lives. Why focus on guns? Why get worked up about this, when we don't about registering our weddings or Fido?

Perhaps better recognition and treatment of mental illness has reduced the suicides. It is a big leap to blame a long gun.

Well, mental illness and guns don't really go along. You don't want to give a paranoid schizo or a depressed person a semi-automatic. Just saying.

And yes, one of the reasons you don't want to give a depressed person a gun is that they're more effective. Suicide attempts via drugs are 3% "successful", while 90% of sucide attempts with guns end up with the person dead.

Yeah, just like the vehicle registry alienates car owners, and the wedding registry alienates married people.

Hey, if the Conservatives had the guts, this would be a government bill, not a private member one. Wonder why this is. Maybe they don't want to alienate the majority of people (54% as of Nov 2010) who want to see an all out ban on guns.

TIMPSON, Texas Two-year-old child shoots another tot in East Texas

Otherwise would probably have choked him with a soother.

What evidence can you provide to support his assertion?

Apart from a few nervous nellies, the gun-nuts will never be anyone else's base but the hard Right's, who are currently over-represented in Parliament due to our dysfunctional electoral system.

There was a time when this issue was properly about the effectiveness of long-gun registration and tangentially, the boondoggle that ended up costing us way more than it should have. That's long gone. With the continued interference of the American National Rifle Association, it's revealed itself to be an issue that is, in fact, much bigger than gun ownership...the purposeful introduction of beliefs that are alien to our shared civic values.

Regardless of the fate of the registry, this lesson will not be forgotten for a long time. And it will only take one mass murder with a rifle (an eventuality that is almost guaranteed) to unleash the payback the Right so richly deserves.

You sub-literate droolers sure make it hard to continue to oppose the gun registry.
