Sure they don't advocate cutting off heads of infidels,

or killing young women for being 'dishonourable'

or stoning gays,

They would if they thought they could get away with it. Although not the Jesuits; they are pretty progressive. Hence their declining numbers.

Sure, hentai-guy. That's what we've been saying about Liberals for the last 35 years, but we at least have evidence. You just have your intolerant bigotry.

Well actually they did and they don't anymore because it turned everyones stomach and people fled fled christianity altogether or turned it into some sort of persoanl wispy god is love concept.

They would if the could but they can't so they won't...

...for now.

You guys are sounding more and more like the Clansmen everyday. They too hated Catholics.

I really hate bigots

Wallace, who does advocate that stuff?

From my reading of Numbers and Deuteronomy, I'd say Jews and Christians certainly advocate it...

Good God...you're telling me you're older than 35? Gosh, I thought you were 12.

The Catholic Church is attempting to re-position itself with regard to the New Fundamentalism. I thought that the Pope's statement about "ministering to a smaller flock" (or words to that effect...I think he said them in Latin) was pretty ominous...that it would mean catering to the likes of BIG BLUE, Flanders, Kathy Shaidle (ie, the nun-traumatised saintes nitouches, the tight-arsed and sexually-ambiguous holy rollers, the hate-mongering, bigoted, serially-failing, suspiciously-barren Catholics...all of whom comprise the kid-touching enablers, by the way). I'm simply shocked at how vocal these marginals have become.

As churches continue to be shut down all across Canada, I don't think it's working out. Maybe it'll re-think the "smaller flock" notion and tell the loony fundamentalists to go join the Talibangelicals, where they won't be forced to consider the spiritual dimension of their unbridled hate.

Religion isn't supposed to be 'fun'. Kinda like how personal responsibility isn't supposed to be 'fun'. But what do I know - I'm just an adult.

Religion isn't supposed to be 'fun'.

That's exactly what the Ayatollah Khomeini once said: "There is no fun in Islam."

You fundies should all convert to Islam...if you're married and heterosexual, everything is permissible in the boudoir...except doggy-style if facing Mecca...so I've heard.

Reminds me of Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" where in the future, the only religions that survive are the ones that practice orgies as part of their weekly services. Society became corrupt and it took a man raised by the Martians to re-establish religion to be spiritual apposed to carnal.

They ended up crucifying him too.
Great book.

Dante,

If the guy was anti-orgy he probably deserved it.

Dante,

I was more of a fan of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"...

Dante has that all wrong too. The Martian guy was pro-orgy. They did not have prescribed weekly orgies; it was more casual: "orgies if necessary but not necessarily orgies".

Holly.
If that is what you got out of the book, you should re-read it.

Heinlein was clearly depicting the guy as a Christlike figure and his religion was about spirituality.

I read the book 25 years ago and I can still remember that.

Dante, do you read Playboy for the articles?

"...He then starts a Martian-influenced "Church of All Worlds," which teaches its members how to rise above suffering, such as "pain and sickness and hunger and fighting." However, parts of the religion, such as group sex, communal living, and cannibalism, make Smith's church a target for enemies following more conventional religions..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land

"...Heinlein described the story, in a letter to his agent, as "a Cabellesque satire of sex and religion,"[citation needed] suggesting that it be evaluated on the same terms as such intentionally unrealistic stories as Cabell's Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice..."

I guess it deals with ideas about spirituality, but those never seemed very plausible or memorable to me.

I read a lot of Heinlein long ago, but got tired of his pontificating old farts who always ended up surrounded by nubile young men and women.
