More Ceremonial Cheque Jiggery Pokery!

Here, which also refers to several other MPs who have done the same thing, and here.

Courtesy Ted Betts, who really should start blogging again.

You should add the image from The Star article featuring three fat old white men grinning like dunces.

These old farts are looting the public treasury knowing full well that they'll have checked out long before the bills become due.

Pretty stupid, really.

It's like they don't know when to say when. The polls are not a reflection of partisan gimmickry, and if anything, that sort of sophmoric "promotion" just diminishes the respect that Harper is developing with the Canadian public.

Without a doubt, pure stupidity. We have them in our party too

Look on the bright side: it might finally push some journalist to highlight, in a series of hard-hitting investigative reports, the over 100 million dollars (conservative estimate) of public funds the CONS have spent propagandising the Canadian electorate in the last four years.

Kidding! All of our journalists are too busy blogging, and twittering and facebooking and pleasuring Tories orally with an eye to a senatorial appointments to do the work *we* pay them to do.

this could backfire if a liberal mp has a similar photo lying around on their website somewhere.

we should be attacking the reformatories on issues that will get canadians' attention. i think a commentator said that on ctv powerplay yesterday too.

Do you have some pics of the cheques written by the Dolton McGuinty government to the scores of eHealth consultants who managed to piss away one billion of tax payer money? Didn't think so.

Like what?

This is just a symptom of widespread ethical failure on the part of the Conservatives. And that's been the Conservative tactical genius...be corrupt in a million different little ways that can be explained away with a million little rationalisations so that nothing gets anyone's attention. It's the equivalent of swarming, which is second nature to Conservative scum.

The federal government was already in a structural deficit last summer and Harper lied about it when he broke his own election law to drop the writ. Canadians rewarded him for that.

We're doomed. The only hope is to find a way to make Saskalberta pay for this once the bills come due.

Nice to see Tory scum come out and play --- as usual, the only on that seems conscious is roblaw...

The rise of teh stupid it would seem....

Not conscious enough to take on his own intellectually- and morally-challenged co-partisans, which is a huge factor in "the rise of the stupid."

I'm pretty sure Rob does this on purpose. He never challenges other Conservatives...not that I know of, in any case.

LOL.. well, let me see:

I attacked Harper on patronage appointments in the Senate;

I attacked Harper's minimum sentencing proposals;

I attacked Harper's partisan effort to reduce election funding;

With regard to fellow conservatives, I have posted on other BT blogs my opposition to courting the religious right, at one point saying, in some respects, "there are some Christians who distinguish themselves very little from Al Quaeda".

..and don't even get me started about the small 'c' conservatives in the Wild Rose Alliance.. according to them I'm a Marxist..lol..

Though, that being said, I'm really not sure of the point of Ti_Guy's ranting.. must have been bottle-fed.

You're not making any sense. The Conservatives are your party.

"if anything, that sort of sophmoric "promotion" just diminishes the respect that Harper is developing with the Canadian public."

Does it? The "small government", "accountable" Conservatives have been doing this since day one in government. From changing website colour schemes and pasting "Canada's New Government" on everything, to mountains of taxpayer-funded Con Party flyers mailed out, the Conservative's sleazy use of public institutions and funds for partisan purposes is unprecedented.
I'm not so sure its ineffective.

If a tree falls in the forest, Rob and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?

The day you challenge head Blogging Tory and Harper cheerleader Stephen Taylor (or head Conservative populist and execrable racist, Kate McMillan) is the day I'll take your dissent seriously. Didn't they support the senate appointments? Or were they conspicuously silent about them?

And your disagreement with other Albertans in matters of provincial politics means nothing to the rest of us.

Is Ti-guy a bed wetter?

The Novelty Cheque Scandal?

$ 10.5 Billion for the big three and you cry about a lame PR prop?

Ask your mother.

My mom does not have your mommy's phone number.

What trailer park should she call or Jerry Springer epsiode is she on?

Stephen.. I am very concerned, at the moment, over the events of the last week. I am concerned that our Conservative party has mis-handled their duties as a minority government.

yeah, I'll speak up with Stephen when I think the party is out of line.. I also blogged against the filling of Senate seats.

I'm not even remotely deluded into believing what I'm always right, but I do try to look beyond partisan loyalty to examine the political world around me.

Ouch! I hope Taylor's recovered from that tongue-lashing.

Rob, the funny thing is that this isn't a stupid move. It's a cynical and unethical move, but it's not stupid to want to get your name and your party attached to stimulus money that might help your riding. The only stupid thing about it is possibly not considering the possibility of getting caught, and therefore not having a good "explanation" (gas-lighting statement), but the pros out weigh the cons in doing something like this.

And this apparent pork barrelling is just depressing.

Novelty cheques matter to regular voters?

Did I miss something, on Libblogs and some media this is an issue.

Lessons learned about wafers, bodybags, plagerism, unsexy comments still not sinking in?

Okey dokey!

Let's try scary evil CPC hidden agenda schtick!

Sad how the liberal leader makes another speech in Vancouver and most libbloggers just ignored it for this storyline.

Very interesting.

sharonapple88 said...

Actually, pork barrelling is an important issue. (See previous comment about obvious porking in Nova Scotia.)

There's no point in getting money to your area if you can't make sure people know that you're responsible for it. Novelty cheques is the lighter side of all of this. Wasting tax payers money to bribe voters is the dark side.

sharonapple88 said...

And to be honest, the way Harper dealt with Keddy, it's clear that he takes the whole "novelty cheque" thing serious. Why?

From the article:

A spokesperson for the prime minister says the money belongs to the "taxpayers of Canada"
and that these good projects are for all Canadians and "not just Conservatives."
