Two More Dead Canucks In Afghanistan

...according to CTV, very likely from a roadside bomb. But of course casualties make for a better fighting force, as Stephen Harper once said.

No, wait. That wouldn't be quite true as the Liberals sent them there in the first place. Under equipped, without helicopters. And it is THAT which is causing the Cdn deaths as I've yet to hear of an IED going off next to a helicopter.

Didn't sound like a gloat to me.

Well it will certainly break the families' hearts even more if the bomb was planted by the four detainees that O'Connor lost in Afghanistan after our troops risked life and limb to capture them.
Where are those people Mr. O'Connor? How many more are there out there due to your "catch and release" program you have going on over there, Mr. O'Connor?

I'm sure the grieving families appreciate all the trolling in memory of their dead.

Nice job.

Well you Liberal cry-babies didn't want them handed over to anybody because they might get their feelings hurt. What the hell do you want us to do now? Set up our own Gitmo! That's it! That'll give you something else to complain about.

umm, i think you guys missed the point. the point of the post was to demonstrate how our prime minister lacks compassion for the sacrifices our troops are making...not bcl, stehpen harper. you know, like donny rumsfeld telling the troops that "you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want".

our prime minister "supports the troops" so much that he doesn't think flags should be lowered to half mast when they die. what a guy.

Speaking of trolling, shouldn't you be holding McClelland's hand and starting a Union Movement somewhere?

Ouch! Retract those claws, missy.

BCL:

Although we share opposing political views, I enjoy your site and appreciate your efforts in that regard.

But it really pains me to see the tragic deaths of brave young men being exploited for political purposes. It's just wrong...

Bruce,

The politics of war is by definition the politics of dead bodies.

And you know there is a world of calculation behind Harper's original off hand remark, and the more measured, methodical statements Gen. Hillier has made to the same effect. That is, he has claimed (but I don't have the reference on me) that Afghanistan is good practice for the wars Canada is likely to fight in the future. I think that is both a militarily stupid and immoral viewpoint, and I do not think it should be the policy of the land. Now if you can tell me how to talk about that without invoking dead soldiers, please let me know.

Even though i think harper is a dick, i believe you should have put more empathy in your post for the people who must be hurting real bad right now. If your best friend just died, i dont think you would want people going on about the bloody conservatives. Harper can wait. Im a firm believer in karma, and harper's got some seriously bad ju-ju going on.

If you think Harper has no class, then this posting is about 4 rungs below that.

"The politics of war is by definition the politics of dead bodies."

Well obviously I disagree with that premise. The "politics" of war is way more encompassing than just that.

It includes views such as "right or wrong", "doing the right thing", "esoteric" ideas such as honour, duty, sacrifice...

These young men deserve, and demand, our respect and thanks for their personal sacrifice..,frankly, no-one knows their personal politics, and at this point in time, no-one cares...

I repeat my objection...their deaths should NEVER be used to score political points.

When Harper says these deaths make our military better, he's not scoring political points. That's an objective truth.

More deaths=better army. That's what the Prime Minister of Canada said.

When did Harper say "casualties make for a better fighting force"? Can you provide some proof that this statement was ever uttered? If you can, post the link so we can all review it.

ti-guy and BCL,

Exploiting deaths to score cheap political points.

Shame's your middle name.

Anon 10:46,

Actually Cherniak did a video clearly distorting the meaning of Harper's comments. He posted it on his weblog but then removed it the next day after getting lambasted all over the blogosphere including even, if you can believe it, by ti-guy's buddy Red Tory. Red Tory deserves credit for that -it showed some balance and class. Two qualities clearly lacking in his buddy ti-guy. But then again, what do you expect from a guy who is a regular over at that sewer known as My Blahg. That's right, not a whole lot.
