By-Election Soon?

On my daily perambles I spied the campaign office of one John Carmichael going up in 49 Don Valley West. Turns out he will the Tory running for John Godfrey's seat in Don Valley West. Here's his website. Probably a lamb to slaughter, given Godfreys' previous margins of victory, but interesting (maybe) in that he's already getting a fax machine in place, as it were. Does this argue for Harper engineering an early election, or making a quick by-election call when Godfrey retires in July?

A car salesman? For Don Valley West? Please. This is a riding where the Canadian Bible College, the largest Korean Catholic Church in Toronto, and the Noor Cultural Centre are all within spitting distance distance of each other, which nonetheless saw a lesbian beat out John Tory.

Liberal candidate Rob Oliphant:

Rob has had diverse and interesting professional career. Upon graduating from U of T, he returned to Sault Ste. Marie and worked at Algoma Steel as an accountant in computer systems development. There he remained for two years before entering the Vancouver School of Theology at the University of British Columbia. After completing his studies at UBC, Rob was ordained as a United Church Minister in 1984 and began a lifetime of community service, as both a Minister and private citizen. Through his work, Rob has gained experience across the country in such diverse locations as an outport in Newfoundland, Quyon, in rural Quebec, downtown Montreal, Toronto, and Whitehorse, Yukon.

And will soon be represented by a gay man at the federal level.

Soon Scott Brison won't be the only married gay in the village.
