Thank You Tories

It is as though they saw themselves getting a little bit ahead in the polls and thought "This isn't really fair is it? Lets do some really stupid stuff to give the Liberal Party a boost!", like:

1) have their glorious leader give a secret speech in which he embraces his Reform Party roots, calls 70% of the nation commies, and puts the repeal of the gun registry front and center in any upcoming election campaign:

...the Conservatives are bent on dismantling the registry - they have three different bills that are before Parliament, they have renewed the amnesty for failing to register and the Prime Minister has been working closely with gun lobby groups to mobilize supporters. While a vocal minority opposes the law, the fact remains, that the registry has been working to make Canada safer. Police use it thousands of times each day and gun deaths in Canada have declined dramatically. Harper is trying to appeal to his base in rural Canada, while presenting a kinder, gentler face to urban votes, women and Quebec. But the message is clear, with a Conservative majority we will lose the gains we have made since the Montreal massacre twenty years ago.

...and 2) offer one of the most pathetic attempts at an "economic update" the nation has ever seen, in which, instead of actually outlining the steps the government will take to stem the flow of red ink, the Finance Minister says things are bad, bad, bad, and the nation will be up to its eye-balls in deficits and debt for longer than anyone can possibly predict. And, just to help spin the media reps he wants to tell all this stuff to, he locks them in a room for two hours before the big reveal.

And it was all voluntary on Mr. Flaherty's part! He didn't have to do any of this stuff!

I just hope team Liberal isn't sitting around thinking that they should return the favour. You know, like: "Next time Iggy gives a speech on Environmental policy, lets have him set his tie on fire!"

Finally, someone should give Justin Tetreault-- who filmed Harper's speech in the Soo, and who used to blog as the Northern Ontario Liberal--the Order of Canada. He may have saved his nation from four more years of Conservative rule. I mean, what did Nancy Green do to get her snowflake? She skied down a hill! That's it!

The Liberal war room is editing clips as we speak, and yet the Con trolls are all over the blogosphere thanking us for all the free coverage getting their taped message out. Most delusional shit I've read in months, and that's saying something.

Delete the comments, non-Cons. Let our faux outrage dominate for once.

The Conservative trolls have a strong need to believe that everything that happens is due to Harper's alleged tactical genius.

I'm puzzled why so many aspects of his speech are glossed over by the CBC. The bit about saying Canada doesn't give a shit about what the UN thinks goes against one of the things that Canadian believe that is one of our country's greatest contributions to the world, our robust participation in the UN. It's hardly mentioned.. And MI doesn't latch on to it either in his rebuttle. What's up with that?

And yet, we go on...accommodating their nonsense and wasting our time believing they're reachable and teachable and pretending that exposing flaws in basic fact, logic and reason is some sort of accomplishment.

Meanwhile, the Con attack ads about Ignatieff being not a real Canadian are repeating ad nauseum on the sports cable channel every evening this past week in Calgary.

But we're not having an election and how dare the Liberals be putting up ads.

In Calgary! Damn! Now the Liberals can never win there!

No real Canadian who values the institutions which represent social justice in our country could utter the words in this video. I'm looking forward to seeing Harper's words repeated over and over in the campaign. Listen up Canadians!

Hi there, My name is Dave and I've been doing some research for the new place-based museum that is forming in the East Point Fog Alarm Building (FAB) on Saturna Island.

We are working on several exhibits, including one about the lighthouse keepers. You might have some information that would be useful to our group. If you are interested in helping us you can email me at david[at]cheslow[dot]net.

Also, I think you might be mistaken about the petroglyphs carved in the sandstone near the lighthouse. My research indicates that they were made by the Vancouver artist Joe Bauer in 1964.

Joe was commissioned by the Vancouver Aquarium to harpoon a killer whale to be used as a model for a life-sized sculpture for the aquarium. Joe waited, camped out, at East Point for almost 3 months before he successfully harpooned a whale. During that time, he carved a number of petroglyphs in the sandstone; there is also a mother and child and a salmon. If you know of others, please let me know. Joe is still alive and we're trying to get him to come out to Saturna in August for a presntation.

The whale did not die and was taken by the aquarium for exhibition (a rather grizzly tale). The whale was named 'Moby Doll' in a contest (later Moby Doll was determined to be male).

The Moby Doll exhibit set off the live trained orca capture frenzy during the late 1960s which decimated the Orcas in the Straight of Georgia.

The entire Moby Doll story will be one of the exhibits in the museum when it opens on May 21.

Do you, by any chance, have the original of the old lighthouse image displayed in your blog?

Thanks,

=dave=
