What The Hell Does It Mean?

Michael Ignatieff has decided his Liberals will no longer support the Harper government, sources say.

But that doesn't mean he'll move quickly to bring the minority Conservatives down either.

Not that I doubt...no,no, I do not doubt. Iggy knows all, sees all. His gloriousness is both transplendant and transfinite, and though I wish only clarity and yet see no clarity in this statement, it is surely a problem with myself and not the party. I am truly weak, and only another $50 donation to the party will make me strong again.

Yes, yes. Strength and certainty. I need to look at that picture of Iggy shaking his fist again.

There, I am better now.

Update: Clarity?

Sources have told CTV News that the Liberals will put forward a non-confidence motion to force an election this fall -- although they need the support of the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois for that to happen

Further Clarity! Click through to the Globe story above and the line about "not moving quickly" has disappeared.

It's "The Dance of the Two or Three Veils." Avert your eyes.

How's "Mr. Harper, your time is up. Vous avez raté votre chance. The Liberal Party cannot support this government any further. We will hold it to account. We will oppose it in Parliament. Canadians deserve better." for clarity?

I dunno what it means. The post-press conference with MPs says first chance they get to wield non-confidence on Opposition Day, they're launching Thunderbirds. That's Bob Rae and other senior guys.

Meanwhile, Harper says he's not met a single Canadian that says they want an election. Given that he didn't know about the Canadian lady held in Kenya until a week before she got back, I believe him.

Clarity is for fools, Ted. Would that it were different, but it's not.

What Canadians does Harper talk to? Supporters and partisans - the every day folks don't get to talk to Harper.

not sure what it means but your post was funny, thanks for first laugh from the web today

Ted,

But will they "oppose" without bringing down? The statement seems to admit this as a possibility.

I think if we do not have a non-confidence motion, after what Ignatieff said in his speech, then Ignatieff is, pardon the expression, a giant pussy.

CRF: Or worse. Even I would say that.

BCL: I'm not sure of the source of your "doesn't mean he'll move quickly" quotation. The linked article seems to have been updated after his speech today and doesn't have that quote (unless I missed it). Was it an "insider" being quoted from yesterday or a party email that was maybe written a while ago?

I think after the clarity and strength of his words today, if he did not move to take down this government at the end of September, then his career is done. Instead, my guess, is his career is being made right now.

Ted, you're right. That line came out of the updated article. But if you check BCers place, he has the same quote (with the "doesn't mean" bit).

I see it now as quoted by Jeff. I'm more baffled by where that quotation came from than what it means. It is not sourced, even anonymously, so it seems to be the reporters own interjection (or speculation?).

Or maybe it is meant to refer to the fact we have to wait until the end of the month before they get their first chance.

I don't know.

But I do know I have not heard such clarity and purposefulness on the question from Ignatieff before today. And that is a great relief.

Sandi I don't think he even speaks to supporters and partisans. Not a sociable man, and not one that people are eager to tell anything he doesn't want to hear.

Here's Bob directly on point BCL:

"Parliament resumes Sept. 14, and the Liberals will have their first opportunity to present a motion of non-confidence on Oct. 1. Speaking after Ignatieff, Liberal MP Bob Rae said the party will present the motion "at the first available opportunity."

Which should put the nail in the coffin on this issue. But I say, there better not be a flu pandemic in the Ottawa region suddenly on October 1.
