Say, Maybe A Carbon Tax ISN'T Politically Fatal

If an election were held tomorrow, 52 per cent of decided voters would choose the Liberals, 36 per cent NDP.

Of course, Gorden Campbell didn't run on the tax, and introduced it early enough into his term so that any backlash spent itself well before election day.

Smart move, that.

As an aside, I wonder if there is any upside for the federal Libs. in these numbers. I've been told that the B.C. and federal wing are entirely different animals, and that the provincial body has tried maintain a healthy distance from its Canada-wide counterpart, esp. during the Martin years. Still, this can't be bad news.

Do you think that Mr.Ignatieff will have the courage to bring back the carbon tax in the next election whenever that is? Just wondering thats all!

Not campaign on it. Once he's got his majority, though, who knows?

While the US appears to be heading toward a cap and trade, there is still a push for a carbon tax. In particular, Nobel Laureate and new energy boss, Steven Chu, is talking carbon tax. It must be very tempting for all these smart people on Obama's team, who know that a carbon tax will be more efficient, and so better for the economy, to try to implement that, rather than the more costly but easier to sell politically, cap and trade.

IF the US goes with a carbon tax, then I think the Canadian public could buy that over a cap and trade. Otherwise, probably not.

It says a lot about the politics of selling these two schemes, that Obama, with all his charisma and sales skills, did not campaign on a carbon tax. I am sure he understands the two systems, as the US Congressional Budget Office provides very detailed comparisons between the two.

Agree, but here is the thing. You know that during the campaign the carbon tax will come up once again. He will then have to take a stand on it one way or the other.

Will the liberals have to lie about it? Has to getting a majority by any party I think that I have a better shot in winning the lottery. I think we both know that the carbon tax is long gone.

We can't compare the B.C.situation. Who are the people going to vote for,the socialist NDP? But at the federal level we all know that it will be between the liberals and the conservatives.

I think he will go into the campaign running on a variation of cap & trade that (he will argue) is better than the Harper version. Given a Lib. win, what happens afterwards probably depends (as Catherine notes) on what happens next in the US. If Obama advocates a cap and trade, then that is what we will have. If he basically relegates the process to a back burner (quite possible), then Canada may be required to make decsions on its own. Who knows what they might be?

There are to many unknowns in your statement. If this if that! Who's to say that it will be better than what Mr.Harper would offer in a campaign? You can't just take a position on something not knowing what will be offered. That's Mr.Layton's way on the budget.

The BC Liberal Party has no connection to anything LPC. The name is a misnomer.

The BCLP is a conservative organization that is a home for "anyone but the heathen socialist hordes in the BC NDP which is really just a front for the godless communists hordes in the BC Fed"

Man, the stench of wingnut is pretty ripe in this thread.

Iffy will bring in a carbon tax, he is already talking about it.

When Iffy first preached about it, the tax money was to stay in the province collected. Dion screwed the carbon tax by using it as a vehicle to fund social programs.

Campbell is doing better in the polls because 'an economic down turn is not the time to change out a government',
BCers still hate the tax .

Typical Liberal, bailout the auto, forestry and manufacturing, and tax Alberta's main source of income.
Yah, that's how you woo the West.
