File Under: Not Surprising

From Western Standard:

According to news reports, police have detained a suspect in Dr. Tiller's murder. The suspect, Scott Roeder has connections to Operation Rescue, as documented here (yes, normally I would have qualms about the source, but everything is well supported with supplementary links.)

It appears that Roeder is also a tax protestor, linked to the Montana Freemen, a group that -- if not exactly libertarian -- espouses libertarian-like views about individual sovereignty and the illegitimacy of government.

FWIW, wiki describes the Freemen as a "Christian Patriot" group. Quite a few of its members are doing time.

Quite a "nuanced" discussion over at the Western Standard. Of course murder is wrong, and yada yada yada...

Meanwhile this report is looking quite prescient.

Domestic Terrorism Fun Facts

Tuesday is the most common day for an attack.... Right-wing extremists tend to be early risers, striking in the morning...while left-wing activists wait until evening and environmentalists wait until after midnight.

...because if you set your bomb off after midnight, most of the cute little animals are already asleep and you're not likely to injure any.

Other interesting conclusions from the American Association for the Advancement of Science panel on domestic terrorism.

[Kelly R. Damphousse of the University of Oklahoma] said right-wing extremists spend the most time meeting, preparing and planning before committing a violent act — some 480 "events," whether that is a telephone call or some other form of plotting.

They like the planning aspect, the speechifying. To a right-wing extremist, all that's like foreplay.

While some domestic extremists travel long distances, most strike within 30 miles of where they live, Damphousse said]. Environmental extremists tend to strike within 10 miles of home.

Right-wing extremists tend to stick close to home because they're afraid if they go too far they'll fall off the edge of the world. Left-wing extremists know better, but how far can you go on a bicycle?

And, oh yeah, here's the most important bit:

When it comes to fears about a terrorist attack, people in the U.S. usually focus on Osama bin Laden and foreign-based radical groups. Yet researchers say domestic extremists who commit violence in the name of their cause — abortion or the environment, for example — account for most of the damage from such incidents in this country.

The article also contains a link to the MIPT Terrorism database, where you can track terrorism attacks by group, country, target, and etc. Holy crap!

Canada had Armenian troubles back in the 1980s?

The Houston Abortion Clinic Bomber: Christian To The Nutz??

Paul Ross Evans has pleaded guilty to the attempted bombing of the Austin Women's Health Center, and more and more it appears as though he fits the profile of a religious (Christian) terrorist:

Evans, 27, who pleaded guilty Friday, had the name and address of Austin lawyer Sarah Weddington, who successfully argued for the decriminalization of abortion in the landmark Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court case.

He also had the names and addresses of a stem-cell researcher, a rabbi and a pornography production company, all in California.

[...]

A later search of Evans' apartment, according to the plea agreement, found the following books: "Pipe and Fire Bomb Designs," "Special Forces Demolition Techniques," "The Turner Diaries" and "The Pelican Brief."

"The Pelican Brief," a legal thriller by John Grisham, was marked on a page about a bombing, the plea agreement said.

"The Turner Diaries," a 1978 novel that tells in part about a militia blowing up federal buildings, was written by the founder of the National Alliance, a white supremacist organization.

Apparently, he also confessed to targeting Satanists, although there is nothing about this facet of the story in the MSM piece linked to above. In fact, it was a spike in traffic I got this morning from The League Of Independent Satanists that made me think something had happened in the case. (Google News Alerts...Phooey!!!)

Did Christian Terror Bomber Also Target Satanists?

Paul Ross Evans, would-be bomber of the Austin Women's Health Center (which offers abortion counselling services), has apparently confessed to the FBI that he also targeted four "practitioners, students or teachers of the occult" with mail bombs. Bob McDonald, president and a co-founder of the League of Independent Satanists', said:

"I can only guess what his motives were. I was part of a Satanic organization and I was a Satanist. He was bombing anyone who didn't fit a Christian world view."

More info via the links, but...Satanists in Wabash, Texas? Obviously, there's more cool shit going on down there than I imagined.

Shock Poll: U.S. Muslims More Loyal To America Than Evangelical Christians

A number of headlines re. this story emphasize the fact that about about 13% of U.S. Muslims support suicide bombings. However, to me the most shocking finding is:

The survey shows that 47% of Muslims consider themselves Muslim first and Americans second.... Among white evangelicals, 62% say they identify themselves first as Christians.

So its the Vangees who are most willing to put their fictitious Deity before the nation! No wonder they're so predisposed to law-breaking activities! For example, this guy from Falwell's Liberty college, who was wanting to pack some home-made napalm with him to Jerry's funeral because he was "upset about an anti-gay fringe group that protested at the funeral".

Hmmm! The threat of white on white violence! Who in the Christian community dares speak out against it?

Christian Terror At Austin Clinic?

From the Houstin Chronicle (chron.com):

AUSTIN — A package left at a women's clinic that performs abortions contained an explosive device capable of inflicting serious injury or death, investigators said today.

Christian Conservative terror groups tend to ramp up activity in times of Peace when there is no external enemy against which to expend their zealotry. With Iraq winding down, the question is will the U.S. start to see more of this kind of thing? And, from a Canadian point of view, will some of the violence leak over our border, as happened during the last go round? If so, I'd advocate making Christians wear little blue hats so normal, decent folk can hide when we see them coming.
