Conservative Party Vs. Gun Nutz: Who Will Emerge Victorious?
Chris Reid, who became briefly famous during the last federal election when the CPoC forced him to step down as candidate for Toronto Center, and who made me briefly famous as well, is back and raising heck again.
Above is his profile picture on the CPoC Facebook site, and some people are not too happy with it. In fact, a party functionary has threatened to lower the boom on him:

But Chris isn't backing down because, I suppose, that would be against Liberty or something. Instead he's organizing a counter-protest of sorts. According to Gary Nichols:
Looks like Chris has a few supporters too.
You know, suddenly I feel terribly unmanly argue about the details of the B.C. carbon tax, especially when Tory ranks are filled with hot chicks like this one.
But in any case, who will win this showdown between Party Central and the CPoC rebs? And will they be packing heat on Facebook?

Ontario PC Leadership Race, Day 5
This guy has a round-up of the early state of the on-line wars, and Taylor the latest list of potentials. I note that Klee's site has a helpful list of the man's private member's bills, including An Act to Declare April 2nd Pope John Paul II Day. I'm always up for another stat holiday (if that's what he's calling for).
Meanwhile, though Tim Hudak is still avoiding playing footsie with the question, the OPC executive's decision to hold its leadership convention in late June effectively tilts the playing field in his direction. The strategy seems to be: bury John Tory, and anoint the front runner as his successor. So far, so good. The fact that Hudak's name is suspiciously similar to the name of an early version of the Ontario New Home Warranty Program does not seem to have impeded his leadership bid. Yet...

You Know You're Disunified When You Fink Out The Party Leader To The Cops
And that's what a number of Ontario Conservatives are attempting to do
Some party members were so frustrated at [John] Tory's leadership that they had been circulating copies of the Criminal Code of Canada, suggesting he was breaking the law by promising to try to find a job or other source of income for one of the PC caucus members so they would step aside for him.
It is an offence under Sec. 124 for anyone to “sell an appointment to or a resignation from an office,” or for anyone who “receives, gives or procures ... a reward, advantage or benefit of any kind as consideration ... to secure the appointment of any person to an office.”
I say, straight-up, that the Tories should keep the guy, for reasons I explain here. Short version: a "strong horse" ideologue from the back woods [R. Hillier, for example] will not win in Ontario for a long time, unless the economy collapses utterly and we all return to a state of Barbarianism. Best keep the moderate you've got.
Or don't, and Dalton will be in power until 2020. Wasn't there, after all, a Psycho IV?

The Next Leader Of The Ontario Conservative Party?
Q: Do you still believe greenhouse gases are nothing to worry about and it would be wrong to shut down coal-burning power plants?
A: There are greenhouse gases. I disagree that human contributions to greenhouse gases are so significant that we should be hysterical running around suggesting we have to do all these things to prevent its catastrophe.
We've had periods of global warming and global cooling from the beginning of time and there weren't too many cars or factories at the last global warming period... I think science is far from conclusive.

Incidentally, the WS piece refers to the Lanark Landowners Association, and Ontario Landowners Association, which Hillier played a large role in, as "excellent associations, worth joining and supporting". Well, yeah, if you like spending the night in jail.
Kudos, incidentally, to the new Western Standard. Looks like they're getting their hands on some half decent material these days. (although it looks like this interview first appeared in the Ottawa Sun)

Will John Tory Run in Leeds-Grenville?
There have been rumors lately that Tory MPP Bob Runciman might step down and seatless Ontario Tory leader John Tory might run in the vacated riding of Leeds-Grenville. Tory isn't saying one way or another, but this Chatsworth blogger doesn't think it would be an easy victory, due to a mini-resurgence of the (believe it or not) Reform Party of Ontario, possibly led by (believe it or not) elements from the Ontario Land Owners Association and Randy Hillier:
That John Tory spurned Rural Ontario by telling Dufferin—Peel—Wellington—Grey that Urban Ontario is where he belonged, when he left to run in Toronto's Don Valley West, he killed any shot of getting back in through such a route again. The best he could do is follow Parry Sound—Muskoka MP Tony Clement up the 400, past Muskoka and north on the 69 because any Rural Ontario run will be complicated by the Ontario Landowners now. This is especially true if such a John Tory loyalist as Leeds—Grenville MPP Bob Runciman even tried his best to sneak him in by resigning, such a byelection would likely produce an Ontario Landowner under the Ontario Reform banner, who like Don Valley West MPP Kathleen Wynne would slaughter John Tory back to a Bay Street condo retreat over the Lakeshore.
The Ontario Tories seem to have themselves a nice little civil war going. I've argued previously that sticking with John Tory is the best solution for the Ont. Flip Flopping Into The History Books
Christina Blizzard in today's T.O. Sun:
"LONDON, Ont. -- In a stunning late-night about-face, John Tory apparently outmanoeuvred his political opponents by announcing he was hanging in as leader.
It was one of the most stunning flip-flops in recent political history. Earlier yesterday, he had said he would consult with family and caucus about his future."
For what its worth, the Ontario Conservatives would do well to keep John Tory.
Essentially, the 2/3s of delegates who voted status quo want to move the party towards the center, where it can win a few votes in the cities and where, once in power, it won't sacrifice the economy on the alter of free market theory.
The last 1/3, the party Rebs, think they can win with a hard right freak that will somehow get Toronto to vote for him via displays of rural machismo.
What this bunch doesn't understand is that Mike Harris was a fluke. When he got in in 1995 he was running against a deficit ridden NDP government and a female midget (can't remember her name at the moment). The Libs were up by ten percent until people saw them all together on stage during the debates and decided that times were tough and if they really wanted "small and cuddly" they would just vote for Yoda.
So ponk! Harris becomes Premier and proceeds to trash the place--a public sector strike every twenty minutes! the air fil
led with smoke from burning dumps! poverty in the streets! dysentery out in Walkerton (in the streets)!
But Harris goes into retirement just when the whole province goes into the toilet and escapes the voters wrath, leaving Ernie Eves here to get tagged with the cleanup and, eventually, defeat at the polls.
But people still remember what Harris did, especially how, after all the cutting and slashing, Ontario's finances were in the same awful shape they were in the day he stepped into office. Hence the extreme negative reaction Flaherty gets when he dares to open his mouth re the Ontario Liberals' spending priorities. What does this guy know about balancing a budget? Nothing, if you judge by his performance as finance minister in the Harris/Eves regime.

Randy Hillier: Rural Separatist, Tory Candidate
John Tory's Ontario Progressive Conservative Party is bringing scary back with the nomination of Lanark Landowners Association President Randy Hillier as its candidate in the riding of Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington. If it's government regulation, Randy's agin it, from seat belt laws to Health and Safety Regulations to the Safe Drinking Water Act . Not only that, Mr. Hillier's solution to these myriad of bureaucratic oppressions is...wait for it...wait for it a little more, because its good.........to have rural Ontario separate from the rest of the Province:
For rural Ontario to breathe freely once again the urban political noose must be cut from its neck, and a new province formed, liberated from the tyranny of the silent mob majority. A new provincial legislature, complete with its own constitution, that promotes justice, freedom and protection of private property and liberty, without infringing upon others is the answer. Rural Ontario must shed the shackles of apathy, correctness, and fear of controversy to regain its prosperity and democratic heritage.
According to Hillier, he will be helping the Tory Torys write their election platform:
"The Tories don't have their election platform.... outlined yet. Should I succeed, I can help shape that," (ColborneChronicle, February 8, 2007).
I wonder if they've chosen a name for the new province?

We don't mind government interference sometimes. We just think they should interfere when we want them to and get out when we want them to.
And isn't that everyone's dream?

Turncoat Tim: Newest Tory MPP Has Dark Past!
Ontario Liberal MPP Tim Peterson moving to the Tories? Hmm. Where have I heard that name before? Oh, I remember now:
In 1997, [Tim Peterson] pleaded guilty to the minor offence of removing a sign belonging to Peter Cobbold, a Reform Party candidate running against his brother Jim in the federal riding of Willowdale.
Interestingly enough, this bit of information can only be found in the cached wiki story on Mr. Peterson. His official wiki bio has the paragraph excised.
(You know, its funny how the mind works. I didn't even follow politics too closely back in 1997, other than loathing the Reform Party, but somehow I recall this incident. Tim kicked over some signs on election night.)
This might be it for today, so I will just note the latest Ipsos-Reid which has everyone pretty much back to their election night totals, which is hilarious considering the piece appears in the Natty Post just under this bit of blovating by Ivison.
Note also, that it isn't like committing this kind of "minor" offence is a sign of great Evil. It's more that getting caught is a sign of great stupidity.
